Replacing tub with shower pan/base -- must be custom made?
Comments (0)Hello all, In our current bath remodel we are planning to replace the bathtub with a shower with sliding glass doors. I measured my tub to be a 60"x30", and visited a bath showroom where the rep told me that they are typically 60"x32" with 2" going inside the wall. I found several 32"x60" shower bases (Corian/swanstone etc) with a side drain on the internet. (My tub has a left side drain and I could find them at several internet stores that sell bath fixtures. My question is, are they standard enough to be used to replace the tub or should I take any other tub measurements and compare for compatibility? Thanks in advance! Also please do let me know if anyone has used other good brands with similar quality as Corian/Swanstone. I am in SF Bay Area, and if anyone here knows businesses that make/sell them then I would love to hear about experiences....See MoreHow to select tile (floor, shower) and shower pans
Comments (30)Hi tmnca! One thing to think about with the Kohler shower pans is whether you may ever be using a shower stool with legs. If you were to get a longer shower bench, the Salient may cause problems because the oval really does have quite a bit of "curb" to it, as shown in Badgergal's photo of her son's shower. With a small shower stool set in the center of the shower, it is fine. If you ever need a longer shower stool, the Bellweather gives you a surface not impeded with the raised oval. I does, however, have a slant to the overall shower floor, so that must be taken into account. I have seen the Bellweather in person. It is a non-slip surface. It almost felt like a surface that would make me trip - catching my foot if I did not pick it up and step. Like if I dragged the foot, it would catch and I would trip and fall. It was a funny feeling to the bottom, and I wondered how it would feel when wet. It was NOT going to feel slippery, though! As for tile in a shower floor, the other reason to have small tiles (besides the grout lines giving traction), is that the small tiles allow the tile layer to better cope with the slant toward the drain. Larger tiles only allow you to slant in one direction. The smaller the tile, the better it is for following contours on a floor that is flowing to a drain from all directions....See Moretrying to find a curbless shower pan 36" wide by 48" deep
Comments (3)For the most part, manufactured curbless pans are simply sections of sloped foam. If you can't find your desired size, you can get a kit that is larger than you need and cut it down, or you can get one that's smaller than you need and infill the gap with sloped deck mud. There are some manufactured plastic pans, like Tile Redy, but they are not something I'd recommend due to installation longevity. I'd recommend either do sloped mud or sloped foam. But that is simply my opinion. Added info: I'd encourage you to make sure that the under-tile waterproofing gets extended out of the shower and on to the bathroom floor for a few feet, and that you use a capillary break at the shower threshold to prevent moisture wicking....See MoreAffordable Shower Curtain Rod
Comments (2)Barclay makes a 96" solid brass straight rod (you can get different finishes, like polished chrome). Google for Model Number: 4100-96-BNOnce you get over 72", however, it is 2 pieces (screwed together - apparently not noticeable with the curtain on). It comes with utilitarian rod ends/flanges, but there's a big market of shower rod flanges. Ginger makes some nice looking ones. BTW at 90+" I'd get a center support (Barclay sells that too) but I'm no engineer. Oh - and you cut the rod to size with a hacksaw - took me a few minutes and I'm not handy at all....See MoreRelated Professionals
