Every now and then you find a gem at the BBS
Comments (4)Hi Aztcqn, Not much popping in my yard other than a bunch of these Aqua Domes protecting my new arrivals. If I don't screw up, if there is no freak weather and if the wildlife around here leave everything alone, I still won't get Echinopsis flowers until mid Summer. And you don't have to hint for pictures--I'll be boring you soon enough, hopefully :-) The plants I bought were in 3" pots. CactusM, thanks for finding the correct name for me. With my luck, they will probably all have white flowers. It's a gamble, but fun at the same time, like opening a present.. Sundewd, I know that I have to buy things when I see them here because they will either be gone or in terrible shape by the time I return. Sorry the plant was gone when you went back. Maybe you will find something even better next time....See Morecame home early from vacation to weed the garden
Comments (3)Being hot down at LBI got me used to the heat somehow. I'd spend a hour in the garden, then an hour inside or in the shade reading, then back out into the garden. Heat, flies.... it was still better than being at work!!...See MoreWill termites kill my vegetables???
Comments (26)I know this thread is literally a decade old... but, I was dead set to prove I'm not crazy, and neither are you! I live in Georgia, so southeast US as well. We (apparantly) used untreated lumber to build our two 20'x4' raised beds this year. I planted 9 stalks of peaches n' cream sweet corn at the far end of the first bed. They were doing great! Then, one started curling like it was dehydrated. So, I checked the soil, realized it could be a little more moist, but the roots were pretty close to the top of the soil. I decided it would be best to add a bag of garden soil around the stalks to keep the roots from being exposed when it rains. The next day, I go to check on the corn and that stalk was done for... and two more were showing signs of dehydration by curling. So, I pulled the dead one up and when I did, the stalk easily broke at the new soil line I had just added the day before! I thought it was strange and dug around the base of where the plant was to pull the remainder of the stalk and the roots out, and when I gently pushed the soil that I had just added out of the way, there were TONS of termites... just like your picture! I panicked and checked around the base of the other stalks and lo and behold - termites. So, I dumped the 2 stalks that were not salvageable and weighed the pros and cons of transplanting the stalks to the second bed. Do I risk losing the plants to shock or losing them to termites? So, I shocked the bejeesus out of them (sadly) by completely cleaning their root balls of termites by rinsing them in water (if I had any other choice...). I replanted them in the opposite end of the second bed and hoped the termites wouldn't make it that far before we could harvest... the corn did show signs of shock for about a week, but then perked up and took off! They were doing great! Then, I walked out to the garden one morning and two of the stalks had broken off at the soil line and completely fallen over... checked the soil - termites. So now, both beds are completely infested and I don't think I'll ever be able to grow corn in my garden :( Anyone have any luck planting termite buffet food in containers that they cannot penatrate? Metal garden beds? Heat treating the soil? I'm at such a loss and really disheartened... </3...See MoreCarpet Experts: Have Busy Family room with dog
Comments (0)Hi, I have gotten such great help from you all in the past regarding my Shaw wood laminate. It is now time to do the flooring for the adjacent family room, and the need has become more pressing. We already had wanted to do it because we need to do new flooring on the stairs from the kitchen to the family room. I had been advised not to do floating floors but hardwoods on a stairs. When we started to think about it, the carpeting in the family room was in such poor shape that it seemed to make more sense to keep the stairs in carpeting and do the room. Since then, we came home from vacation Friday and our fish tank pump/condenser was leaking out the back and the corner of the room was damp. We removed the water from the tank and took everything out of that area. We cut out the affected carpet and pad and threw it out. There was some mold starting and we didn't want to wait. It just wasn't worth saving and allowing things to grow. We have a standard poodle so my understanding is that we should not get a closed-loop/berber carpet. I need advise on what would be longlasting. I have never ordered carpet and feel woefully ignorant. We will have it installed by a company that did a great job for us in the past. They will probably have good insight when we shop there but I value all of your outside opinions. Details about the room: 1. Room size is about 21' long by 13' wide. 2. Door from the garage comes into this room and there are many trips daily from that door to the kitchen and rest of the house. (There are two carpeted steps to the garage.) 3. There are two carpeted steps down to the combined laundry/bathroom. 4. There are two steps up to the kitchen. 5. Half the room has sofas and TV (and formerly a fish tank). 6. Half has Knex/play table, sewing machine and closet, plus throughway. Kids are age 11-16. Finally, question about color: Like so many people, we have a beige throughout our house. Would like to do something a little darker that doesn't show dirt quite so well. What are the trends in carpet color? I am not trying to rock the boat with this choice. I will not be able to start shopping until Sunday-Monday but want to dig in at that time and get something ordered. Appreciate all your advice!...See MoreDyan Weis
