Need furniture ideas and placement for living room

We are updating furniture in living room. The Foyer opens up to living room and dining room at opposite end. Fireplace on right, 2 windows on left. We are getting rid of all furniture in living room except leather recliner, secretary, and possibly square wooden table. What furniture, rug and placement would you suggest for this space?

Here are my thoughts…I would keep the rug if it’s long enough for the new furniture configuration (unless you really want to get rid of it)…it’s beautiful and fits with the aesthetic in your home, looks to be in good shape, goes with the recliner, and could be a great counterpoint to more updated upholstered furniture with solid or subtle patterns. I think because it’s a walk through to the dining room, the best furniture layout is a sofa with two chairs flanking the fireplace…to keep the room open. But because it’s so spacious, the scale of the sofa needs to be bigger. Think long velvet chesterfield sofa. The square table could be one of the end tables, along with another end table, and topped with similarly scaled table lamps. Your buffet lamps could go on the buffet in the dining room. Move the secretary to the other side of the opening to the dining room, but on the same wall. Then a new chair in front of it angled on the fireplace…either a swivel or a light weight frame chair with upholstered seat/back that could serve as seating for the secretary, if you use it that way, and for the conversation area; or if not, then a fully-upholstered, stationary, comfy chair. The recliner would move to the right of the fireplace. These chairs would sit closer to the fireplace, rather than in the corners, accessorized with different floor lamps and small drink tables. The rug would be moved closer to the windows so it would be under the front legs of the chairs and the sofa. Lovely home!

I like this layout because that beautiful secretary would be the first thing you see when you enter the room. I also think the existing rug is beautiful. I’d work with that when selecting new furniture. I’d get low backed chairs so the one at the entrance doesn’t block the view of the room.

If it were me, I would put the couch on the wall with one window to open it up more, but not against the wall, float it out a little maybe put a console table behind it with a lamp or two. I would then put the tv on the stairway wall, possibly angled in the corner? You have quite a few options. I know it is difficult when you have such a big room but floating is the key. You can always anchor the space with a large area rug.

I don't see how putting a sofa facing the DR and the TV on the wall segment between them allows for decent viewing. I see your two options as (1) putting the TV in the corner (not necessarily on the diagonal -- a 65" TV is generally a little less than 60" wide -- doesn't leave a lot of space, but it can be placed flat) or (2) putting the TV on the wall between the window and the DR and floating a sofa opposite the TV and in front of the stairwell wall with a walkway behind it. I would probably use a sofa or sectional facing the sliders with the TV in the corner and a console or sofa table along the back of the sofa to give a landing spot for the DR and a transition between the rooms (most sofa backs just aren't that special base for a reading lamp too). You say you lean contemporary and the space in that corner is limited, so I would consider a non-traditional option for the TV console. This one is a lot less bulky than a traditional cabinet. It could place the TV flat or angled a bit without being obtrusive. We have a FR with an open end and lots of doors and windows like yours and the only real solution for us was to put the TV in the corner. We had a cabinet for a long time and more recently got the easel (ours is the black, which is a stain so you see grain and it comes off more charcoal than heavy black like a painted finish would be). I am so much happier with it. The components all sit on the bottom, we got charcoal grey flannel baskets for the rest of the shelf space and a cord storage box to contain the power strip, plugs and help control the cords. Once you get decide on the TV and sofa placement, the rest will fall into place.

Wow! Those windows going out to the porch are beautiful. What a great view! I think you should have two separate sitting areas because the smaller chairs don’t work with the larger chair. I love how the larger chair looks with your sofa and pillows...just lovely! Is there room to remove the end table on the right and slide the rug, sofa, and big chair down a couple of feet? And keep the big chair angled towards sofa like in the first photo...away from the chase part. Then I would leave the two smaller chairs under the opening but pull them out a bit so that sitting area stands in it’s on. Looking forward to seeing photos of what you do especially when the bigger rug gets in! I like the black idea too.

Another voite to remove the fireplace and hearth. Will you keep a desk area? If so, I would move it to the wall left of sliding doors, put the sofa table on the wall where the desk is now and the sofa against it. A lamp or two on the sofa table. Sleeper sofas are super heavy and sometimes not that comfortable to sit or sleep on. For comfort, a left hand chaise would be nice for TV viewing. With the FP gone, the TV could go to the left a bit and could sit on a small media cabinet. Rig sized correctly and a small round coffee table. ETA: After looking at photos again, I see that is NOT a desk area. If FP is removed, you could use that chest on the "new" wall with the new/smaller TV on top or hung above.
