Siberian iris roots

Hi all, I am planting to plant about 10-12 Siberian iris in a certain location. Looking at online sources, I found one company (Eden Brothers) that sells as roots. I've only planted S. iris as plants before. Will roots planted this fall be as strong and grown as well in the spring as plants would be? Also, any other suggestions for places to p urchase these would be welcome.

fall planted siberian iris come as leaf trimmed rhizomes with roots and should do well as long as they go in before your ground is freezing...

I think our club has ordered from Cascadia Iris gardens before

@Ann....I just purchased striking dark purple Siberian Iris from Hardings Nursery here in Southern Colorado Springs. $13.50 each gallon pot. They were in bloom, about 6 fans in a pot. Choice! If your coming down my way...or contact the nursery...maybe they'd ship them?

I've divided Siberian Iris before...they will divide nicely...but it does set them back.

Thanks to you all. You're right, it wouldn't have been a disaster -- it's only that I want to use this area to plant some more fragile things, and have had experiences with some other persistent perennials out-competing plants I'm trying to establish. Also my Siberian irises did so well that each plant became a monster in short order, and they were so difficult to move that I guess I was a bit scared! Laugh all you want, but those roots were like rock! :)

My thoughts are this: If it's green, it's sending energy to the roots for next year's growth. I would not cut the foliage. However, I have a suggestion for you on the dividing. Saws-All (reciprocating saw) with a pruning blade! I did mine with one of these last year and it worked great!

Spurias need dividing much less often than tall bearded irises. I also find that the newer TB introductions that are very tall seem to grow a bit more slowly, and I avoid anything that is older and described as "vigorous" and is also a rebloomer- like Grandma's Purple Flag. I could not keep up with that iris. I planted it at my neighbor's :) I like iris foliage, and mine do not die back. I just pull out the yellow and brown leaves. The dutch iris are not expensive and are delightful in the spring. I found the same thing to be true of my mix. There were more blues than white or yellow. Molly
