Butternut squash - lots of flowers only one fruit?

I found a volunteer Butternut squash plant in a Berm I built last fall. It was made with unfinished compost and had to be from the butternut squash we buy. It grew very well and is a very healthy plant. It is very large and branching in multiple directions and over running some nearby plants so I am planning to cut it back today away from other plants. It's been flowering since early summer. Lots of flowers and still flowering. But only one fruit.
I am sure I should have asked this early summer, and no chance to increase my yield for this year, but I'd like to do it again next year and wonder why it is only producing one fruit?
