Pros and Cons of Slide-In Ranges versus Cooktop and Oven Cabinet
Comments (42)The dials on a slide-in range are at the front. You don't reach over the hot burners and steaming pans to change temps. This is recommended for "universal access" kitchens because a wheelchair person can use them a little better, although the surface is not lowered. These dials are easily accessed by a child, which might not be a benefit, though, if the child is just playing. The digital clock on the upright backed models is easily seen from a distance; same with the lighted indicators that show whether surfaces are hot or oven is in use. On a slide-in, the front dials and controls are on the same plane as the cooking surface so I would assume you need to approach the unit to see the lights. somewhat off topic.... regarding ranges....We began this remodel with the intention of using our old electric coil range until it died. I began to do some research and found that the upraised back on new ranges has risen significantly in my lifetime. I suspect that the gov't began to require that the dials be positioned farther from the cooking surface--in two past ranges I've worked with the dials were cockwacky because they'd melted a bit. Today's range appears to be abt 75 inches tall at the back OR HIGHER. This is a significant design aspect if you're planning new construction. We thought we'd put our niche behind range up high enough to clear any new range but when I got new one, there it is arching in front of the bottom of the niche just a bit. If you're going for a standard range like this, forget any fancy backsplash, esp if you have an under cab hood unit there also, since it has to be mounted lower than some of the decorative hood units. Our niche extends up behind the vent unit, which allows taller bottles if I get crazy and buy one of those exotic olive oils or something. There is only about a foot of actual space between the top of the range's arched back and the bottom of our vent unit. Comments (19)I've had a separate cooktop and double ovens over the past 25 years. In our basement kitchen, I have an Electrolux all gas range which I love. However, I don't like standing in front of the oven while I am using the burners. In our upstairs remodel, I am going with separate components again. I am putting one oven in a stack with an inexpensive MW over it hidden behind an Aventos door, (like the photo below), When the MW bites the dust,(and it will) out it goes and another inexpensive MW goes in without any fuss, and no spending $$ on a MW trim kit like I have done in the past. The other 30" oven is going to be below counter, (mostly for overflow and holidays) where it is not visible from the other oven. If I need to replace one oven down the road, and can't match it, it won't make a difference, as they aren't together. It will also make it more convenient when there are multiple people working in the kitchen at the same time. We are 6'5" and 5'3". Comments (19)I've had two induction ranges. I bought the first in 2010. It was an Electrolux. The cooktop was awesome when it worked. It burned through computers, but when we finally got them fixed, I had no issues. It was a dual oven, but the bottom oven was basically a warmer. We recently moved, and I could not take the Electrolux with me. I bought a GE Profile. We have a large family, and I liked that the near right burner was very large. The cooktop only has 10 or 11 steps to it compared to my Electrolux, which had many more. I miss the half steps, though I have managed to make a hollandaise sauce, so at least it does ok. The stove, however, on the GE is not great. It's at least 40 degrees cool, and GE says that is within range. The fan has burned out twice. We've only had it 10 months. I've called service multiple times, and they always come out and are friendly. I use cast iron and enameled cast iron on my stovetop all of the time. I have used with and without a paper towel. I don't find that it scratches. As long as you do not move your pan, it won't scratch. Regarding boiling over - our Profile does not have a lip around the edge of the cooktop. I have never had it boil over. As soon as I notice something getting too hot, I turn the temp down. With induction, the temp goes down immediately, so it should not overboil. Were I to purchase a new induction range today, I would look at the GE cafe or the Bosch. We only have a 40 amp circuit for our range, so that would be a consideration. I still don't think I would go back to gas, but purchasing an induction with more than 10 steps for heating would be more important to me than it was when I was looking to replace our Electrolux....See MoreInduction range pros and cons?
Comments (23)My gas range will light with a match and therefore will work during power outages. We also have camping equipment in the garage and can cook on a portable propane burner, if necessary. I have a single induction burner, which I like to use with my pressure cooker, but I would never want to switch to all induction after trying it. I think the best solution is to have both, if possible. Personally, I do not like the way induction ranges look, and I do have a lot of cookware that will not work with induction. Also, I often use the gas flame for heating tortillas or grilling peppers. I also have a wok that I like using that would not work at all on induction and I tend to move pans around on the stove top a lot. Anyway, I would never give up gas, which is why I think having both is the best solution. My mother had an electric range, which I thought was the worst, and I could never tell which burner was on and often I could not tell when a burner was on at low temperature....See MoreDebi Lopez
