511 and perlite size (or use turface?)

The perlite I have was called "coarse," but it really has quite a different range in sizes. Is that OK to use? If I could get another size in the future, what size would I be aiming for?

I read in another post that I could substitute turface for perlite. True? (I happen to have some turface which I purchased years ago!) What would that do to my mix?

    NewHostaLady: yes I use 5-1-1 for my ferns, but thats where I use the finer stuff that most people would throw out. It stays moist just a FEW days longer. I use 5-1-1 on the majority of my plants- orchids, begonias, hoyas, palms, holiday cactus, etc.
