Hello all, I have a design conundrum.. We are redesigning our bathroom. Will have greyish wood-like porcelain floors, blue ceramic tile shower, penny-blue/brown/gray mosaic shower floor, and a white acrylic tub. The question I have is: Should I go with a brown vanity or urban gray vanity? Either way, I'm going with a white quartz top... just can't choose the vanity. I have the exact same situation in our bathroom that is currently undergoing a complete remodel, except no pocket door, but a vanity space that is only 59" wide. My solution was to have the contractor remove the wall on one side and re-install the studs sideways. The studs are 2 x 4, but actual size is 1.5 inches x 3.5 inches. So a stud wall that previously took up 3.5 inches of space (before drywall) now takes up 1.5 inches of space (before drywall.) I have now gained 2 inches of space for the vanity, turning a 59" wide space into a 61" wide space, which is 1 more inch than needed. I will be using a filler to fill in that extra inch, which will be scribed to the wall, and will make it easier to slide the cabinets into place. As kudzu9 above mentioned, it's very difficult/impossible to set a 60" vanity into a space that is exactly 60" wide. I have 1 inch to work with now, and it will probably still be tough. This method will only work if you have a non-loadbearing wall that can be disassembled and re-built. Also, flooring in the bathroom will be affected. In my case, one wall is an exterior wall that can't be touched, but the other wall is an interior, non-loadbearing wall. If your heart is really set on the James Martin Balmoral then you should take Jan Moyer's advice and get a smaller size and float it in the space, because the sides will not fit flush against the side walls anyway. I looked at many attractive vanities with legs, and noticed that none of them had straight, flat sides that would fit flush against the side walls. Another problem is that if you get them to fit, they will be very difficult to clean, because dust will accumulate on the sides (since they are not straight and flat) and you will not be able to clean it off effectively if you can't get between the side wall and the vanity. I ultimately decided to go with 3 "built-in" vanity cabinets (sold in kitchen cabinet stores,) to get a built-in look in this space, with no gaps at the sides that could accumulate dirt and dust. I will have a 24" sink base cabinet in the middle, and (2) 18" drawer base cabinets on either side with a 1" filler to completely fill the 61". I spent a lot of time shopping before I accepted that there are no off-the-shelf vanities that will completely fill a 60" space with no small gaps on the sides.

I don't actually know these brands very well, but I thought I'd take a stab at your question: the best information I can offer is regarding construction quality. If you went to a cabinet shop and had them build you a vanity, you'd get a box with 3/4" cabinet-grade plywood (frameless with good hardware, or framed with solid wood). You'd get doors/drawer fronts built from the hardwood of your choice, and finished however you want (stain, laquer, paint, varnish, it's a long list). There are also joinery types/levels of quality, but let's leave that aside for now. Most of the cabinets from West Elm, IKEA will be designed in the West, and made in South Asia. The cabinets are made of cheaper materials like particleboard and MDF, often with nicer fronts with solid wood. This doesn't mean they are bad - there is some pretty nice stuff made out of these materials, but just know it's not the high-end that they sometimes purport to sell. (quick note: sometimes door panels even in high-end cabinets will be made of MDF because of its stability with weather changes) Taking a quick look online at one or two vanities per company: West Elm: Particleboard box with solid wood doors/drawers in various finishes Ikea: Particleboard box with either paint-grade (ie pine) solid wood or particleboard doors/drawers Pottery Barn: Everything from MDF throughout to solid wood throughout Without actually resorting scoring any of these, I'd say they are all of similar low-mid quality, although Pottery Barn does have some nicer stuff.
