Name That Plant!Perennials Upstate New York

Found growing wild, is it a stonecrop?

Hello! I found a bunch of this plant growing in a shady corner behind my shed. I'm in upstate NY. It's leaves are a little thick/fleshy, the root system is shallow, and I think it might be stonecrop, but I don't know what kind. I'd love to plant it somewhere I can enjoy it and see it grow. There's probably four times this much back there - what is it and what should I do with it?

It does resemble a stonecrop - Sedum. Plant it in full sun and it will be much happier.

do not move it from heavy shade. to full blinding sun in august.. without hardening it off ...

i mean.... its near impossible to kill a sedum.. including just throwing it on the driveway.. and planting it with the snowblower in january.. lol ..

but just keep it in a flat in bright shade until sept.. and it will be much happier.. use scissors to cut the bottom edge of the container you have it in to add drainage to the pot/tray/flat ...

i will bet it flowers yellow...

Yep what I have read says they are invasive...I've replanted.it in a shady spot in the ground near my outdoor porch...ill.let it go a year or so and see what happens...I agree leaves are cool looking flowers frequently and reproduces regularly...An orchid novices dream....lmao

Not sure where you live, MzMolly, but if you live where L. columbianum is native (and it does look like L. columbianum), then it cannot be L. superbum anyway. L. superbum is not native west of the Mississippi River. Many (most?) wild Lilium species in the USA are protected by law. In many states if protected lilies grow on your own land, you can do as you please, but it is against the law to dig or pull them without the landowner's permission, if it is legal at all. (You would have to check your state's DNR listing for the species.) Fortunately L. columbianum is one of the more common western wild lilies. I don't know if it is protected where you pulled it or not. But some lilies are rare, and a hefty fine would be imposed (and rightly so!) if caught digging or pulling them. In fact, some are becoming rare BECAUSE people are digging (read: poaching) them! So next time, maybe the better thing to do is photograph an unknown flower, and find out what it is before uprooting it. Rick

OK I've parked it on the tray on the north side close to the house, where it won't get any direct sun but it's under open sky and generally brighter than where it was before. Thanks!

It is likely Hylotelephium telephioides if it was a true native, and not a garden escapee. The flower will be pinkish if so.

Note Hylotelephium are not Sedum, and are not closely related to them.
