njmomma, Most of the daylilies available in commerce today are hybrids, which have been created by someone selecting parent plants and then cross pollinating them. Sometimes the pollination results in a seed pod. Hybridizers try to keep track of parentage, plant the seeds we harvest and hope the resulting seedlings will look superior to their parents. Then we will give them a name and register them with the American Hemerocallis Society. Some have estimated that a really superior daylily is one in a thousand seedlings. It usually takes one to three years for a seedling to first bloom. So you can see why we are particular about our seedlings. Hope this gives you a little insight. Ed

. It is just a regular orchid tree. Which BTW, is considered invasive in South FL. I did not identify mine as Hong Kong. I have three varieties (had 4, one never recovered after this winter) One regular colored From Backyard Summer 2007 one white fragrant, one light pink colored. All from seeds, yes, not Hong Kong I am yet to see one seedling pop up in the yard. All took 3-4 years to reach blooming size.

Deanna, according to Bill Cullina's book on native wildflowers, Asters are self-infertile. This means that you need at least 2 genetically different individuals that cross-pollinate with each other to get viable seed. For example, you need another cultivar of New England Aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae) besides Alma potschke, that blooms around the same time. Is Alma Potschke the only New England aster that you have? If so, you won't get viable seed from your plant.

Is it left over from last season? Maybe from an inflo that you kept on it during dormancy? That sounds like its possible... I have a seed pod on my J-105 from last year and it just " there" without any leaves as of now.. It will take another few months for it to mature. They say it takes around nine months for the pd to ripen... Leave it.. It not hurting anything.. It would be nice to see a pic of this pod. Sometimes they do pop up, but its usually after the flowers have been pollinated .. So lets see a pic and then we can determine what going on!! Have a great day!! Laura Sorry it's sideways..
