Autumn sage - Salvia greggii
Comments (6)Kea, On tuesday I picked up the Salvia listed below at Russells in Wayland. There were other varieties as well. Salvia greggii (one of my favorites) 'Plum Wine' and 'Cherry Queen' Salvia involucrata bethelii described as Rosebud Salvia produces deep rose tubular blossoms on 2' spikes in August-October 5'. Salvia guaranitica 'Argentine Skies' (have grown before) 4' nice pale blue flowers. Salvia guaranitica 'blue' which I am hoping is probably 'Black & Blue' Salvia subrotunda Also known as "hummingbird Salvia" 3-4' Here is a link that might be useful: Directions to Russells Garden Center...See MoreVariegated Salvia greggii x jamensis
Comments (12)I acquired 'Desert Blaze' on sale at a local nursery here in Raleigh last fall. The person that I bought it from warned me to be vigilant in cutting back any branches that started to show signs of reversion to non-variegated leaves. So far it has not put on enough new growth for me to tell how much of a problem that will be here, but I suspect that the nursery personnel had been trimming these plants back and that was the reason that they were somewhat straggly looking....See MoreSalvia Greggii
Comments (14)Mine are in a south facing bed that has a garage wall on the north and west side but they are in the east/south part of the bed. It has some overhang of sparse oak branches that have no leaves in Winter and they have survived 24* weather for a couple of days. I mulched with redwood mulch - real hairy like. I used small stones and redwood mulch on my other tender Salvias and they all came back except the Leucantha. This is a fabulous Salvia - I call it the "Energizer Bunny" as it blooms for so long. Be careful as the branches are brittle and easily broken, otherwise enjoy....See MoreNeed Good Source of Salvia greggii Navajo Red
Comments (10)I can send you what they sold here a few years ago. There is the original one which is about 6 years old which came from Lowe's and some others I picked up at a local farm market last year for the salvia hedge. They appear alike to me. A slightly unrelated question. Can soil conditions cause flower color to be slightly variable? My oldest San Carlos Festival plants are a kind of dark pinkish. They match up well to photos I've seen of other SCF. The group I planted in the hedge are much redder. In other ways the plants are nearly the same taking into account that the ones in the xeric hedge have slightly smaller leaves and aren't quite as bushy....See Morerosaprimula
