Looking for Small Island Cabinet
Comments (9)Hey Red, I did some searching and just found out I can get your same island from an unfinished furniture store not too far away. He's got a couple styles I can see in person on the floor. And the plus is the one like yours is made of parawood (which I had not heard of till now), which has the strength rating of maple. Nice! Owner told me they sell no MDF, no composites, so I'm going to check it out. Thanks so much for that info! threedgrad: I was going to head to JCP today but decided to call ahead first (to the Home Store). No islands/carts on the floor, they said that's a catalog/internet only item. :/ LNT offers the same cart as JCP (again, not in my local store, internet only), but is less expensive, they don't charge extra for stainless or granite tops, and with a coupon would be a far better price. If you're interested, the unfinished furniture store owner gave me names of several companies to check their websites for islands that he can order. So if there is an unfinished furniture store in Phoenix area, perhaps they would deal with the same vendors? The ones you show above from JCP are hardwood sides and granite or hardwood top. Others are either composite/MDF or don't state what they're made of (figure those are probably composite as well). John Greenleaf/Whittier I get a 'session time out' error with their site, but found another dealer who has many whittier items listed along with prices. Pine, oak or maple wood. Woodcraft (many pieces in pine, maple and oak) Inwood (no islands but did see a couple small shelf/cart pieces) Archbold Small selection, birch and pine. Birch is harder, pine is very soft. Pine would nick/gouge easily, tho several good coats of poly might lessen that to some degree. Personally like pine for a great rustic look, but not for more traditional look, as it gouges so easily even with several coats of poly. (A fingernail pressed on it can leave a mark, even with poly on it.) So anything on casters that got bumped into something else during rolling would gouge more easily than a harder wood....See MorePROS, White Perimiter Cabinets With Plum Island Cabs? Thoughts?
Comments (125)I'm new to this forum and love hearing about taking chances on color. As you said, you can always paint it after a few years if you don't like it. I've been leaning towards navy blue or teal green for our island. We're also incorporating a banquette into it. As it faces the family room, I'll be using the colors throughout our family room and kitchen so it will blend easily. I love the idea of plum with green and other fall colors -apricot, buttery yellow, deep red. It would look great together although I'd tend to do more neutral sofas, chairs and other pieces, bringing the color in through throw pillows, art work, your kitchen decor- using lit cabinets on top with the same punch of color showing. As for countertops, I think the wood that I've seen on here looks great with the plum and then you can use whatever you like on the surrounding cabinets. Personally, I'd stay away from the brass hardware and go with bronze. Brass is already "dated" according to the professional guidelines I've seen although, it's still a matter of preference. If you like it, use it. There's also black hardware depending on your other colors. I'm thinking that I wouldn't want to distract from the plum with any shiny hardware that would stand out too much. Have fun with it! Rules are meant to be broken when it comes to color otherwise, we'd be living with the basics only....See MoreAlabaster Cabinets Looking Yellow - Looking for Wall Paint Advice!
Comments (3)I would start with your lighting. What kelvin bulbs are you using? We used SW Alabaster in my daughters house. It is the main wall color throughout but she has mixed it with gray accent walls in her kitchen/dining room. All ceiling, base and door trim is SW Extra White. The kitchen cabinets are an off white and island is dark gray with white subway tile. The Alabaster looks fine in her house and doesn’t appear yellow like yours though that can be the photo. It’s difficult to capture the true color. I do know we had to change from her initial gray choices as they were way off once we did samples and checked throughout the day with different light. Once you try different bulbs, I would ask your SW store for a paint deck to bring home to choose several to get samples. I always paint samples on large panels and move around in different light. You might also go to a tile store and check out sample boards. Google the term “grays that go with SW Alabaster” and you’ll find many colors go beautifully with Alabaster. Can you take another photo further back so we see more of the room? What rooms are adjacent?...See MoreLooking for input on island cabinet configuration
Comments (6)@GreenDesigns... Our cooktop is 30" (actual = 30.75" wide & 21.5" deep). Based on all the dimensions for the downdraft unit, I don't see why a 24" deep IKEA cabinet would not be sufficient. Can't the prep area act as my secondary emergency landing? @catlady999... I'm not trying to use houzz to win an argument. She doesn't know exactly what she wants, so i'm trying to provide as many options as possible. Fortunately, since these are IKEA cabinets we could pretty easily experiment with current or my question #1 idea pretty easily. I was trying to move the trash under the stove so that when she is standing at her prep area to the right of the stove she could have the trash drawer open at the same time to put stuff in. This is how she currently operates, so i'm trying to duplicate that. If i put the trash in the 18" cabinet, then she has to stop, backup and open the cabinet each time. Pots and pans could go in either cabinet to the sides of the cooktop base cabinet. @damiarain... 1.There would be trash and recycle in the cooktop cabinet. I want to use the 10 gallon Variera bins. These have a 16" wide by 10" deep opening. Since i expect to loose around 12" of depth to my drawer due to the downdraft, i figured this was better use of the 12" or less of drawer space. The pots and pans would then go into the 18" cabinet to the right or in either cabinet if i made both of them 15" wide. 2. My wife and I are the only 2 that occasionally sit at the island in our current kitchen. Once in a blue moon our 12yr old son will grace us with his presence. So for that he would sit at the end. 3. I've tried to get feedback on the layout but the thread always dies out. But, here is the current layout again if anyone wants to provide feedback at this point....See Morelittlebug Zone 5 Missouri
