Curtain crisis: How on earth am I supposed to blackout these windows?

Good (6am) morning from my super sunny master loft suite.

I spent a few thousand dollars on beautiful custom light filtering blinds, thinking that they would make our upstairs at least somewhat dark in the mornings.

Unfortunately, they don’t do the trick.

I’m looking to add a decorative and functional blackout curtain layer over these blinds so that I can sleep in past 6 AM on the weekends. 🤣

Problem is the windows over the stairs. I don’t know how to curtain them so that it doesn’t look weird.

Anyone with a design eye out there that has had a similar problem??

It would be a lot less $$$$$$$$ to suck up the mistake, replace, and get shades with black out feature. By the time you buy even ready made black out curtain panels and the hardware to hang? EEks!

Cheaper by FAR, to buy these, WITH 100% black out, and leave it alone

Or........ you consider the possibility that waking at 6:30 and being unable to go back to sleep, means you really aren't very tired. :)

Roman shades hung high up against the ceiling would look much better than what you have. Even so, I am sure you can get shades that fit inside your casings that would be much darker than what's there.

I haven't had a chance to come back here and say thank you for the extra encouragement. I really appreciate it. I haven't done anything yet, I had a situation pop up and I've had to pour all my extra time into it. A girl who I have been mentoring, her father died over Spring Break. He had been undergoing dialysis since the fall, but it didn't help. His death left basically three orphans, they have a mom, but she doesn't live here. I've stepped up to help the family who is taking over until the mom shows up. Whew, we've been busy. The person who identified the drapes as the issue in the room...you are 100% correct. The longer I look at them, the more I know that is truly the problem. I've looked a couple of times for a white linen type drape. I think Pottery Barn might have a set. I want to go by and look at them. Whatever color I choose, I think white drapes might be the best choice. Harrie: Your "Enchanted" paint looks very similar to my bedroom. I do love that color. It was my first room to paint and I still love it. I used "monet inspired" fabric for the drapes and I have a white "iron-style" bed with a white chenille bedspread. It's still the best choice I ever made. I finally put up the rest of the curtains in the green bedroom. I need to make the bed (oops!) and take a picture of that room too. I love it almost as well. I'm still contemplating painting the rest of the walls green, but until I have a moment to breath, I'm calling that room mostly done. Lisa

Reading this post just made me text my boyfriend and tell him what a good boyfriend he is and how much I appreciate him. You remind me a lot of me. I'm 31 now, but I dated a slew of guys who were takers while I am a giver. My ex bfs were not as bad as yours, they were actually ok guys who just didn't have it in them to be good boyfriends. I am a social worker and have dated a lot of "fixer uppers", LOL, it's in my nature. I accepted less than I deserved from a relationship hoping they would come around and actually be the kind of boyfriend I really wanted. None of them ever did. Then, I started dating someone completely not "my type". Didn't look the my usual type, didn't act like my usual type, wasn't into the same things as my usualy type, etc. He's the best boyfriend I've ever had, we've been dating a year now. He pays for things when I'm low on cash, he walks my dog so I can sleep in, he made a REAL effort on my birthday and surprised me with something very sweet, he drives over an hour multiple times a week to spend time with me, he tells me all the time how much he appreciates and loves me. I'm not a big Dr. Phil fan, but I've come to rely on something he says all the time: "When someone shows you who they are, believe them!". Your boyfriend is an @ss, pure and simple. He treats you like crap despite all the nice things you do for him. At least if you were his maid and whore you would be getting paid for it! Right now you're doing it for free with no appreciation or reciprocation. Be single and happy and the right guy will come along. It has nothing to do with how attractive or not attractive you are. Actually I've seen a direct correlation with guys who think they are soooo good looking and being shallow pieces of crap. Don't settle for any less than a guy head over heels about you who shows you constantly how much you mean to him. Try dating guys you usually don't, maybe you'll be surprised by what you find!

You could also hang the curtains on rings that attach with metal clasps. That makes them easy to remove to clean. Most draperies and curtain rods have "returns" on the sides. You could run your blackout curtains on rods underneath the outer ones. Putting them all on rings allows for them to be pulled to the side and opened. A curtain that has a rod pocket and is threaded onto a rod is not able to slide open. You might be able to slide them back with some effort, but that is awkward. I recently put my grand daughter's curtain on rings so that it could be opened. Her mother and other grandmother are more attuned to closing themselves and her up into the house. They never cared nor questioned that the curtains were permanently closed. That was back in September and the curtains are still open as I left them. The curtain is a very nice custom made one that I made. It was hung on a temporary basis that never got addressed for two years until I put it on rings. She is only three years old and I don't think she even knew that there was a window there. Now there is a little more than just an overhead light in the room. Now there is some real daylight. If you use separate blackout curtains it leaves your outer layer of curtains to be changed when you feel you need something different and you still have your blackouts. Have you looked at buying blackout lining at Joanns? Do you sew? You could do one solid panel across the window, as opposed to one on each side, and just have it slide to one side when you wanted it opened. I used to do draperies and they used to sell one by RocLon that worked quite well. That was some time ago and things may have changed.

I'm coming in late on this thread, and I'm apologizing if I missed something. Your room is layering nicely and you definitely have a European style. Window treatments only compliments the room decoration and it will never distract from the chandelier. The treatments should go from ceiling to floor and the beauty is in the details. A cornice and panels will frame the outdoors and add to the interest of the room. Here are some window treatment: Consider this simple cotton ticking and blue instead of red in your room . You seem adventurous to pull this one off. Natural linen valance with lace Austrian shades. There are all sorts of lace from simple to ornate like this one. Depending on natural coloring of the fabric and the detailing, it could be amazing. This would only need one special lamp in the center.

You could get "locklight" black out shades from Hunter Douglas if you are willing to start from scratch. If not....

Get a barn door=type sliding shutter for the stairwell window. Ditto the window next to your computer.

Run a cable above the double window from wall to wall, close to the ceiling. Tighten it up. Get a one huge drape made from a blackout fabric you really like, put it on ring hooks so that you can easily pull all across the windows at night but it will otherwise hang bunched in the corner at the top of the stairs. Make it long enough to touch the floor of the landing, which means it will pool considerably to the floor of the bedroom so it should be a soft fabric.

@mytwocents Like this idea - just concerned that the length to reach the landing would be 2.5ft longer than necessary in the room - a lot of puddling when closed…. Hmmm

You could make them the length of the bedroom floor and it might look just fine coming up the stairs, or you could cheat by getting an independent panel just for the stairwell that didn't pull with the rest of the curtain.

PS: I suggested barn door hardware for the shutters because it didn't look like you had enough swing room near your desk for typical open-close shutters. But if you have room for a swing close door, or a bi-fold shutter, might give you more flexibility. You could even get a simple piece of cheap wood padded and upholstered to be a shutter.

Imho drapes or shutters are really going to be unwieldy and not look good . Sometimes we have to acknowledge mistakes and start over or live with them. I know I have had to in the past replace mistakes I made .
