Help! Oversized rug in living room

I'm redecorating my living room. I currently have a 8x10 bamboo rug that I don't love because the color is too reddish and doesn't match with my decor. I just bought a 9x12 jute rug at a good discounted price but I just realized it will be too long for my living room (as a newbie on rugs, I thought the rug should to go under the tv console) if I place the rug right after the tv console it will end right in front of the book shelf behind the sofa -
I don't want to unfold the new rug yet , I'm afraid it will be harder to re-sell after is opened (I can't return the rug 😩) - Will a oversized rug look really bad in this situation? I would love to see pictures or ideas of a oversized rug like this.
Just for extra info: behind of the sofa I'm planning to install a drop down table to use as a dining counter with some stools.

Hi. Let's backup here a second and save you some money.

1) While some will differ, I don't agree with a rug over carpet. There is zero need for this. Always looks to me like you are trying to hide a stain or trying to hard to decorate. There are many other ways to make a room interesting.

2) The console table you plan to add to the back of the sofa: There will literally be almost zero room to walk between it and the large etagere unit. Zero room when a chair is pulled out.

3) Jute rugs are extremely hard to keep clean. You cannot steam clean them like a regular rug.

4) Conclusion: return the rug and save some $

5) Instead of console dining table, buy an adjustable height coffee table. (Can be raised to dining height or lowered to coffee table height). Your current coffee table is too small anyway).

6) If possible flip the tv console and etagere. Turn sofa around. This will give access to the deck without walking through the tv area. It will also get that very tall end of the sofa against the wall, so the room feels more open. It is currently acting as a visual blockade.

7) If you want a black and taupe theme, add interest in the form of more pillows and throws. Chairs need more cushions. Add drapes to the windows. Do not add any more black. Bordering on too much already.

Have you taken painter's tape and taped out where the jute rug would be?

Have you ever considered flipping wall unit and the TV -- or is the cable where the TV is can't be changed?

I have lived in 2 log homes. I understand your problem! Do you have any interior stonework also? Last time I was in this position, I tried to pull the base color of the rug from the lightest tone in the stone on my fireplace, so that I didn't end up with too much going on. Jewel tones do seem to work well, also. I like the last 3 you posted in the comments. It is really hard to pick unless you can see the rugs in person, too. I ended up ordering my last rug through a local furniture store, where I could see and feel samples. They ended up being very competitive on price. I tried ordering online first, and the colors always seemed a little "off" once I got them rolled out in my wood-everywhere house.

Sorry, not sure why the picture didn't post. Here it is again. RL, I like the round pendant and the pleated one in your first set of suggestions. Is that a Nelson bubble pendant? Also, I should have given a few dimensional details. The table is 36" wide at the ends, 40" wide in the center. Ceiling height is 92".

Looks like I've got two threads going here. Not sure how that happened. I'm very tired of the orange color in my house due to the logs ..so don't want orange rugs. I'd like to make the room lighter and maybe a light white/ grayish wall paint color and some white airy curtains and a lighter colored rug. I have lots of ppl in my house at times so I don't was pure white. I'm including a pic of a rug I like but I'm not sure if its good in this space. MY big issue is the ceiling/ wall color disconnect . ON my monitor I see beige walls and a real stark white ceiling not a good combo. I think maybe a shage could work and some real art not posters in this nice space .Please take that clock away and use it somehwere not in the space where you entertain IMO

Why are you putting a rug of any kind over edge to edge carpet??

Get the hard flooring first. Then get area rugs. If this is a rental.... skip the area rug or accent ONLY under the cocktail table after you improve its size. Use a 4 x 6.....rug

Honestly, you have too many matched and leggy black iron elements in one space, not enough softening with upholstery

Jute for indoors IMO is horrible on bare feet and it sheds like crzy . I actully like the orange / red rug . As for the table behind the sofa not going to work I like the idea of flipping pieces or the adjustable coffee table idea. I do not like rugs over carpet unless it is like maybe a cowhide or something like that .

Actually, I think it might look really cool if you moved the wall unit to the other wall and hung the TV on the wall unit, as is. You probably need a pro to help you do something serious to brace the unit to the wall and the TV to the unit (or the wall) to make sure it never tips over!

But then the whole room would look more balanced and very modern and you would end up with so much extra space. And the TV with plants would be a great feature, and your big floor lamp would be a great avant garde accent with a round tulip dining table.

I'd stick with the bamboo you have. You need the extra color in there, plus it looks good (in photos).

If you use the oversized rug, see if you can center it between walls (between the TV console and the wall unit. Then it'll look intentionally sized.

I don't mind rug over carpet. If you don't have the money or the time to rip out old carpet or tear up your floors, it can be a good choice.

Is that an actual jute rug or a poly rug meant to look like jute? If it's too big and real jute, I'd just try to sell it.

Thank you everyone for all the feedback!

I decided to open and lay down the jute rug. This look so good! It is centered between the two walls. Here are some answers to the feedback!:

1. We're renting, we have wall to wall carpet except in the kitchen and bathroom.

2. I prefer not having a dining table in our apartment. We are mainly using the kitchen counter for this porpoise.

3. The tv will stay on that side of the living room because we don't want the windows glare on the screen. And I personally dislike the first thing you see entering to an apartment is the tv screen.

4. I like the idea of adding curtains and something else behind the tv console to unify the living room.

5. I like the idea of a cowhide rug , possibly layering the jute rug under the coffee table?

6. Attached a picture of a DIY hack for our IKEA Ekebol sofa, we like the idea of adding a narrow drop table (8" to 10" deep) to the back of the sofa to use as extra eating space/workspace (Attached picture).

7. Thank you for the suggestion of the lift top table, but most of them are rectangular and we prefer a rounded table since our dog likes to do zoomies around it (less probabilities of injure lol..) I think I could diy and add a lift top to my current table or find a bigger round table with lift top!

The new rug looks much better, I hope the jute works out for you. If not, it made the space look nicer for a while, it was a good deal and a lesson learned.

The jute looks great there, good choice. So much better than an expanse of carpet. Size is perfect, too.

I have a jute runner and like how it feels on my feet. Not scratchy at all.

The size of the jute rug is fine, but don't layer a third rug (the cowhide rug you mention in a comment above). Repeat some of the brown tone brought in to the space by the jute rug as decor items on the shelving or perhaps with a throw pillow on the couch or a throw on one of the metal chairs since you've got a lot of black metal leggy items going on.

Now move the sofa and coffee table back toward the shelving. Leave just the minimum space that you need to walk behind the sofa. That will give you a better entry into the house.
