HAVE: Morning Glory tie dye blue
Comments (3)I'm interested in your mg tie dye blue. I didn't see anything on your want list that I have, but you can check my trade list to see. Here is a link that might be useful: kek19's trade list...See MoreClematis 2017
Comments (39)Thanks Rouge. I will keep my eyes out for Tie Dye. I know Canadian Tires usually has a variety of different 1 quart size clematis varieties. Hopefully I will be able to find one next spring. I just got 1 Gillian Blades as well. Mine was in a 1 quart container with one tiny stem and no blooms. I will have to wait until next spring to see a few blooms...so thanks for the photo!...See MoreAnybody ever order from Hirt's Gardens in Ohio?
Comments (41)I too ordered the Brindebella Purple Prince from Hirt's, and now I'm wondering whether Hirt's is mistakenly misrepresenting it as the "Purple Prince" rose by Nola Simpson from New Zealand. Anyone know? There is a "Brindebella Purple Prince" sold wholesale by Sun Fire Nurseries in the U.S., and that's what appears to be the rose sold by Hirt's: http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.72335.2&tab=1. I'm certain this is the Hirt's-sold rose, because Hirt's sells another rose from the "Brindebella" line that Sun Fire Nurseries markets. There is a different "Purple Prince" rose bred by Nola Simpson in New Zealand and sold by Style Roses in the U.K. That's the one with the impressive photos, claims of very strong fragrance from 6"-inch blooms. http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.72745&tab=1. But the "Brindebella Purple Prince," according to the info from the patent application that is on HelpMeFind.com, was bread in Australia by Sylvia and John Gray, and the blooms are only 4". Maybe someone at Hirt's marketing team Googled "Purple Prince" and then copied and pasted the info and photos from the Style Roses website in the U.K.? Oh well. The Brindebella looks great too, and the patent application claims "complete" resistance to black spot and strongly fragrant blooms. Sounds good....See MoreClematis Tie dye- additional question about bloom
Comments (9)I agree with BorS. The issue is not unexpected :-) Sometimes you will get precocious flowering on very young plants but 3-5 years before a clematis vine hits its stride is pretty typical. Tie Dye is also a pruning group 3 variety or a late flowering hybrid and IME, these are slower to start producing heavy flowering than the other types. They also tend to flower later in the season than the other types, especially in more northern climates. I am still waiting to see significant budding on my type 3's here.....season doesn't usually start until at least July, sometimes later. Young clems are also heavy feeders as well so I would fertilize liberally when you prune in spring and then maybe once or twice again during the growing season. Rose or tomato fertilizer is great, especially if they contain alfalfa meal. If not, supplement with alfalfa pellets or tea. btw, pruning guidelines for clems are just that.....guidelines only. You can grow a clem perfectly well without any pruning at all, although hard pruning of any type early in their garden life will help to establish a better and healthier vine with multiple stems from the root crown. After that, pruning is more of an aesthetic consideration than one of necessity. And any type can be pruned if required......it is only the timing that will vary depending on type....See Morerouge21_gw (CDN Z5b/6a)
