Exterior paint trim suggestions

last year

Looking for suggestions on a white shade of paint for the trim color on this house. Preferrably Benjamin Moore. I've tried so may shades of white and can't seen to nail it down. The house faces west. Thank you.

Because of the lighting in the picture it's hard to tell what color the body of the house is exactly. Is it a pinkish taupe? Which colors have you tried already and what don't you like about them? Have you been sampling on boards or are you just looking at chips?

Hmmm, I wouldnt say it's a pinkish taupe. It is brown (and darker than I was expecting, bummer). On the garage door trim I sampled Dove Wing, Classic Gray , both look "dirty". Simply White wasn't bad, White was too bright, almost bluish. Here in NM the sun is very bright. I've purchased these samples from BM. I'm thinking I may try Cloud White.

I tend to lean towards lighter trim, but since you're washing the brick in a white wash, I'd go darker. Maybe a medium gray?

Exterior House Trim Colors Suggestion Needed

Too bad those downspouts are so prominent between the windows/balconies! Try paint that helps them match the brick better. If it were my home I would go darker with the parts you want to paint. What are the railings on the balconies made of? Could they be matched to the bronze windows? I don't care for the curved aspect of the roof or the little shallow arches underneath the porch; out of keeping with the hip roof of the home. Would look better if the lines tied in with the belly band on the left side. Not too expensive a change to make. The pencil posts are also a bit weenie for the volume of the brick house. I think you could get away with fewer of them, squared up and looking more like they were original to the home. I get the impression this porch was a later addition. The stubby mushroom bushes look to need replacing. If painting is your main project, then a renewed landscape plan is the next step to improve things.

Can someone suggest a good white trim color for house exterior?

I have a south-facing house, colonial style, with a cedar shingle roof. I am painting the exterior BM Newburyport Blue (classic navy). Not sure if I should go bright white for the trim, or something slightly creamier. I get overwhelmed with white choices. My house is on a lake, if that makes a difference. Thanks in advance.

Oh interesting on the color. I believe it's white because of the territorial style of the house (NM).

And you are right, those lights look too small.

My first thought was similar to Beverly's, that white isn't the right direction to go in. All whites and even off whites will be too light. Although if the body color is really brown I don't know that I would choose a gray for the trim despite the fact that the roof is gray. If you had the stucco painted recently just use two shades lighter for the trim. The garage door shouldn't be white, either. Bring home a selection of chips from the Historical colors that are brown and gray. Look at Manchester Tan, Shaker Beige, Edgecomb Gray and the other browns and grays in that collection. Look for a medium tone that complements the base color.

I've searched for homes in Phoenix and never heard of white trim as an indication of "territorial style" IMO calling your contemporary home 'territorial' is a real stretch

I am in NM. Maybe there is a difference...not sure. Hopefully the link works for you. Maybe it's more Santa Fe style, modernized. But thank you for your suggestion on the paint color, which is what's really the issue here.

The taupe color of the home seems dark to me.

Yes, it definitely dried darker than expected but it cost a good chunk of change so the stucco is staying as is.

I would look at a lighter shade of what is on the stucco or a shade of gray, like Rever Pewter.

Houssaon, thank you for the suggestions. I sampled revere pewter...I'll look at it again.

I also did a color match to my downspouts because they're a nice shade of brown (not too red or purpley) which looked good but the color was so different from the garage trim to the actual door...it's much darker on the garage door. Maybe I need to do a 25 or 50 percent on the door??

Hi! What is the paint color on the body of your home?

    D D thanked texmax13
  • last year

texmax13 - It started as Sto, color suede. We just had it restuccoed and they tried to match the original but the color dried a bit darker than expected. So not painted, but stuccoed.

I'm going to talk to our stucco guy about removing the white trim around the window and the top peak of the garage, and just relathing and stuccoing up to the window like all the others on the house. These are the only two openings with that crazy peaked trim.

I'm painting the garage door desert tan, which I've matched to the C.H.I. Overhead Doors color. That will leave me with a trim color decision for just the soffit/fascia and garage door trim.

Do you have any ideas on color? Thanks

  • last year

I pulled this center color from Sto’s site (Suede). I would consider the following colors from Sherwin Williams:

My neighbors house is Sherwin Williams Down Home, which is a little darker than this Suede; her trim and fascia is Fresco Cream and her garage and front door is Garret Gray (all Sherwin Williams colors). The colors look beautiful together. I live in Las Vegas, so these color schemes are commonplace here.

If you prefer Ben Moore, here are some colors to consider, but I personally like the Sherwin Williams options more.

Is this the Desert Tan you were referring to?

texmax13 - thanks so much for the color suggestions. I had come across Down Home and will give it a second look because my stucco is a little darker than suede now due to the restucco being an attempted color match that dried darker than suede.

I guess I'm just put off by the pinkish hues :(

The Desert Tan I had BM color match is from the CHI garage door color swatch

Any way I could see a picture of the house youre talking about?

I will snap a picture of it tomorrow :) These suggestions look quite different in person and totally different outdoor in natural light. Her trim (fresco cream) looks like a warm off white next to the deeper body. They are all in the red/yellow hue family (orange) which would be the same hue family your stucco is in. The closest match I could find in Sherwin Williams to the sample on Sto’s site would be Nearly Brown or Dormer Brown, but like you said; it turned out darker. Thank goodness it’s not Ben Moore Desert Tan, I was worried for a second haha. Here is the Desert Tan:

My suggestion would be to paint the trim and garage door the exact same color as the stucco. This will provide unity and cohesion to the house-you don't need contrast as the stark difference between the dark stucco and white trim is jarring. The garage door is so very prominent and painting it the color of the stucco will help it blend in and stand out so much.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I really appreciate your expertise. I'll post a pic when it's done. BTW I am not doing desert tan for the garage door. The color was not right.

Diana - I really do like the way the houses around me have their garage doors and trim blend in with the stucco color. There are only a few with contrasting garage doors and I'm not sure if it's a trend that may go out of style. (Oh my goodness, how I'm realizing this is a first world problem).

Here is my neighbors house. Down Home body, Fresco Cream trim/fascia, Garret Gray garage/front door. I tend to prefer a darker garage rather than lighter because it’s not necessarily something you want to highlight. I do like a contrasting trim though. Also, don’t mind the skelton in the yard; it was dark when I got home from work, so she sent me a photo she had in her phone.

Nice! The Garret Gray looks really nice on the garage door. What direction does the house face?

the colors work really well together. Thanks so much!

In your opinion do you think I should have the peaked trim removed? That would mean all the window trim on that one window would be removed and the stucco applied up to the window like all the other windows on the house. I am at a loss about the trim color around the garage and window coordinating with the trim near the metal roof. Your neighbor's colors work well because the roof is the same hues.

    Omgosh, laughing at those skeletons!!

My neighbors house faces south. Since the trim is really ony around the garage and that one window, I would probably do it the same color as the body of the house. Then I would do the garage and fascia as close to the roof as possible. Here are some colors to consider, I really like bear creek but you’d need to check them each out with your stucco color.

The trim around the garage and window are gone. It will be relathed and stuccoed up to the new garage door jamb and window soon. Now I just have to deal with the soffit and fascia.

The color matched roof paint doesn't look good on the soffit/fascia against the brown stucco and the paint I used for the garage door and jamb (SW Sanderling, very close match to the stucco) doesn't look quite right against the roof...sigh.

One of these could work for your soffit/fascia:

Texmax13, Do you think the darker colors rather than lighter would better suit the soffit/fascia?

The roof is a lighter gray metal. It's Ash Gray. Thanks for your suggestions.

Think of it like this: a lighter color tends to highlight or draw attention a feature, a darker color (unless there is a lot of contrast) can tone down or shadow a feature, using the same color as the body will help something to dissapear/blend in. I think choosing something similar to the roof color for the fascia/soffit is a safe bet OR you could use your ”accent color” which is what you chose for your garage but you said you didn’t like it with the roof. You also said it’s really close to the body color, and I’m not sure you want everything to look like all one color.. There is no right or wrong answer here, just a personal preferance. Here are some lighter options that could work:

For anyone still out there. Here is the finished product. We removed the trim and had the stucco applied up to the window and Garage. We had to replace the entire frame of the garage case because it was 2x6 rather than 2x8. We are just waiting for the courtyard walls to be stuccoed.

texmax13 - The color used for the garage is your suggestion of Sanderling. It goes so well with the stucco color...I would've never looked at that color. Good eye! Thank you.
