Hibiscus is one of the very few plants I treat different than others in containers. I use 3:1:2 ratio fertilizer (like 24-8-16, 12-4-8, or 9-3-6) on almost all my containerized plants. Well, actually, I use it on hibs too, but with a twist. Hibiscus is not overly fond of P(hosphorous), but it does like K (potassium). It likes a fertilizer low in P but higher in K than most plants, so something that supplies at least as much K as N - a fertilizer with a 3:1:3 or even a 3:1:4 RATIO. Since you should have on hand a 3:1:2 ratio fertilizer for almost all your container gardening needs anyway, it's quite easy to turn your 3:1:2 ratio fertilizer into a 3:1:3 ratio by adding a little potash or Dyna-Gro's Pro-TeKt 0-0-3 (better choice because it has silicon in it) to your fertilizer solution when you fertilize. It's best to avoid 1:1:1 ratio fertilizers like 20-20-20 or 14-14-14 because they supply much too much P in relation to N or K; and it's important to avoid all bloom-booster fertilizers and fertilizers with a middle number as high as or higher than either the first or third numbers (N or K). In the end, you can use any 3:1:2 ratio fertilizer (I like Foliage-Pro 9-3-6 best) right from the package with good results, but adding a little extra K to that strategy would be an improvement and please the plant. You would need: Miracle-Gro 24-8-16 (granular soluble) or MG 12-4-8 (liquid) or Dyna-Gro's Foliage-Pro 9-3-6 Plus, if using any of the above, you can improve results by including a small amount of potash or Dyna-Gro's Pro-TeKt 0-0-3 in the fertilizer solution whenever you fertilize. For example: Vernon and Irene Castle slapped their names on everything and anything you can imagine and stuff that you can't from candy to cigars, shoes, records etc. This was back in 1912. They were the pair that put ballroom dancing on the map and made it extremely popular. Irene set many fashions trends in her day including the incredibly ugly but very popular stove top hat and was one of the first to bob her hair setting off a new look for hair in the 1920's flapper. They owned nightclubs and dance studios. The Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers dancing that we all recall fondly in their old movies was based on Vernon and Irene's innovations in dance. My kids (aged 30 and 26) are not swayed by such nonsense and neither are their friends. I think there has always been (and always will be) people who feel safer purchasing something endorsed by a "name" and others who look for quality, value and style. Are you talking about a box bay window? It's not supported underneath, cantilevered out from the side of the house a foot or two? I think a window store would sell this setup then you have to roof it. We had a bay with angled, windowed sides but no reason it couldn't be a box bay with or without glass in the sides. Or, a carpenter could make a box and you put a single window in it.
