Best Climber--Penelope, Pax, Felicia, Moonlight?
Comments (31)I grew 'Ghislaine de Feligonde' as a short climber up a pine tree when living in north Alabama in 3 or 4 hours of morning sun. I had to prune it a lot to try to get it to climb up the pine. I think its natural form is more that of a mounding shrub than a climber, but it is easy to prune because of its multiflora canes. It had a beautiful spring flush and then bloomed a tiny bit through the summer and then a little more in the fall. It stayed pretty clean, foliage-wise, during the summers in Alabama. I grow it here in the PNW as a mounding shrub on the north side of a wall, so it is definitely shade tolerant. It blooms more all through the summer here than it did in Alabama. I am inclined to think the reason it does is because it's cooler here during the summers than it was in Alabama, but it could also be a difference in soil, sun, or clones, I am not really sure. In both places I have grown this rose it has had acid soil. It's a multiflora rambler. How do polys do for you, Kate? Just another thought - if you want a cream/white colored climber that always seems to be in bloom, Kate, take a look at 'White Cap'. It's healthy and blooms a lot although no fragrance to me. Also not the small blooms of the hybrid musks. Another thought is- a new one for me is 'Creme de la Creme'; it has only bloomed a little so far for me, but I think it will bloom more as it gets older. The cream blooms are really pretty and they smell like ripe pears to me. That was a new scent for me this summer; I am anxious to see how this one will do next year. Sorry if I muddied the waters for you! Sombreiul is really thorny - neither of the two above are too life threatening! Hope that helps. Comments (17)I can imagine a few design ideas where I think onesies would look pretty. But typically, if I'm doing onesies of anything, it's either THE focal point of the garden, or I'm trialing to see what performs best in that setting. Once I've ascertained what does best, I like to use a lot of the same, whether the particular plant is massed, as in a hedge, or scattered throughout. Three different varieties of roses is kind of a magic number for me in terms of a maximum, since I think a triad creates a rich color scheme. But I'll want to use a lot of each of those three varieties, for a restful, harmonious garden. That said, I'm a big believer in the concept that "imagination rules" in design, and that you should create what you love. jannike...See MoreExperince with these DAs, own root
Comments (7)I've grown about 30 different DA roses, all grafted with the exception of Scarborough Fair, Pretty Jessica, and Francine Austin, which were new this year. I was pleased with how well Scarborough Fair and Pretty Jessica grew during the first summer, and it's encouraged me to think about trying some others own root. I've grown a number of own root OGRs, modern shrubs, and even a few floris. Results are mixed. If I don't get enough growth in the first year, they're probably not going to survive the winter. Many of my DAs sprawl more than I'd like. I expect that's just the habit of some varieties, but I got to wondering how much of that was due to rootstock causing vigorous growth....See MoreNew DA intros at Chelsea show
Comments (18)jjpeace, I have Wollerton Old Hall, and it doesn't look like any of the three to my eye. But here's a picture taken yesterday, so you can judge for yourself. Wollerton is unfortunately in rose purgatory, a terrible, inaccessible area where pictures have to be taken from a distance, so it's not the greatest shot. It's an elegant cup-shape that holds up well in the heat and grows tall. We have lots of detailed pictures of roses along with evaluations on Humpty Dumpty House Facebook page. Your "likes" are appreciated, as they help us restore and reopen our gardens after my lengthy hospitalization.
