I have 6 of them growing in a raised bed about 3 feet wide with a 6 foot wall behind them and there is no vine characteristics.

I cut them back hard twice a year to about 2-3 feet and just did it a month ago once done flowering and the hardwood is already covered on couple of them with 3+ inches of new growth. Like gyr_falcon says, it self supports and gets 8+. I have seen it self support 20ftx20ft.

Sometimes I lightly cut back some tall ones a foot or so.

It so vigorous not sure it can be trained or I don't have the time.

If it grows out past into pathway to front/back walkway I cut those back.

It will sucker sometimes.
