It's likely as good as it is there due to the beneficial passive solar support all that masonry provides it. The British have successfully grown "tender" plants against warm wall for generations. It would be very interesting growing the same rose out on a fence without the concrete, brick and stone around it to provide it the reflected, radiated heat to prevent it from being frozen out. Congratulations on providing it a beneficial position!

That’s beautiful! I am also growing a Laguna in zone 6a by the Great Lakes in NY. It’s hardy here. I will transplant mine from previous home to a new garden. It looks like yours are growing next to the street. Do you have people to cut your roses?

@roseseek I'm in zone 5 and my Laguna (own-root, this is year 3) is planted with nothing around it to reflect heat, and I experienced poor hardiness with it. I lost most of the cane, only about 6" of the bottom remained. It is young so maybe that affects hardiness? I'm sure the wall is helping the OP's specimen, as you suggested.

@Mischievous Magpie (CO 5b) immaturity can affect hardiness, but I do suspect you would experience greater success with it were you able to provide that passive solar heat protection as Sherry Sun has been able to.

Gorgeous rose. I bet everyone who pases by cant help but admire such a beauty. I was planning on removing two baby plants I have on a shed since I already have other very good roses in this color range and Laguna is such a thorny beast. After seeing this gorgeous picture tho I think I will reconsider. Her health here is exceptional.

Good to see you posting Summer. My new garden is doing well I am the one struggling to work with such heavy clay but they roses don’t seem to mind. I moved around 50 roses and gave up after that lol. My my poor husband is kind but I think he was very relieved to quit the process. This is a fully no spray garden so it has been fun to experiment.

For me, in zone 6, Laguna is super hardy, tough, and healthy. It's a huge thorny monster and blooms like crazy. Mine is not in a particularly sheltered spot, not near a wall or anything. @MischievousMagpie, I'm surprised that yours seems so delicate, given what a beast mine is, though of course you're a zone colder (Helpmefind does list it to zone 5b). I wonder if the fact that it's own-root has anything to do with it? Mine is, if I remember correctly (I've had it a long time) a graft.

Glad to hear that Dianela. Transfering roses is not an easy task for sure. I wish I could go organic with roses, but I have midge. I am doing organic with fruit trees and veggies. This is my 2nd year transfering roses, moved smaller roses first, still have midsized ones to dig before I can get to the big ones.

My Laguna is facing west where the chilly wind comes from. The low temp here can get to -10F. It’s about 6-7 years old. The winter here is getting milder than before. Just bought 12 Viking Queen rose trees, I am planning to plant them in the ground and do some winter protection. I normally grow rose trees in pots, but Viking Queen is hardy to zone 4, and the root stock must be hardy. So I will give them a try.
