Looking for some ideas on a unique fireplace. It’s stacked concrete bricks (according to a mason) with staining that we’ve been able to somewhat remove. The attached photo is pre stain removal. We’re painting the wall to the right Oakmoss and the rest of the room will be evergreen fog. We get a lot of light in this room and we have cathedral ceilings and a black cast iron insert. We are thinking of painting it light gray . Open to other ideas including type of mantle

Here are a few. One from before we moved in and 2 as we’re doing Reno’s/construction so don’t mind the disaster in the room.

I have opposite problem/question. My house came with fireplace that has 8" tall hearth with slab on top which seems to be sandstone, and which now has a hole in it the size of a few quarters. I never liked the color anyway, and I would like to have granite instead. It seems the easiest least expensive make-over would be to just put a slab of granite on top of the sandstone (with mortar in between). Is this feasible, or is the sandstone too weak to support the granite?

You may be able to remove the brass trim around the surround as shown here I personally do not like the look of a gas fireplace insert, I think it takes away from the beauty of the fireplace. So I like to cover them up with an appropriate fireplace screen. Thrown in some fireplace tools for added authenticity. Provided by: Hansen Wholesale Fireplace Design Service

Are you planning on removing the mantel surround? You might find it a bit of a challenge to remove the granite without destroying it. Regarding the material to use in it's place, we need a little more info about the room and the style you are wanting to achieve. Can you send some room pictures too?

I wouldnt paint it. Its a very nice looking fireplace, and is already pretty neutral. Leave it for now, and live with it for a while. It can always be painted later, if you really dont like it.

Thanks for the suggestion!! We’ve have it for 2 years now and do not like it. In person it’s old and dingy looking and doesn’t match the rest of our updates so we are going to paint it
