I have a young acer palmatum that has been in my yard for about 2 years. While the tree did fine the first year in my yard, this spring when leaves came back, I could see that a lot of the branches at the top of the tree had died off. What could have caused this and is there anything I can do to prevent more die off?

I'm in Sacramento California, zone 9a, where we had an unusually wet winter.
