Such A Nice Little Rose
Comments (11)It was a sickly rose here for a long time, and after years of struggling with it, it just died back more every year. We have 2, side-by-side. I think you could make a hedge, planting them a couple feet apart. Anyhow, we threw up our hands, and said we were going to let them sink or swim on their own, as tho they were Chinas. And on that regime -- deadheaded only "bend & snap," they made a complete turnaround. Yes, they are twiggy. Yes, they have crossing growth. They're happy with that, and that works for us. They're easily 36-ins tall now, and beautifully shaped, and NEVER out of bloom. And they are disease-free. (But, Sherry, I DON'T know about blackspot.) When we pruned them, they rusted and mildewed. No more. Jeri Here is a link that might be useful:...See MoreHoly Crapola...Columbus Earth Kind Garden has grown like mad!
Comments (9)Nick, yeah, same here in Kansas how each rose insists on doing their own thing. Sometimes I swear they have their own psychology. People always talk about waving their shovel as threats and the roses "suddenly" shape up. When I had Fragrant Cloud for example, I would always brag about Lincoln and its GORGEOUS COLOR! and FC would try so hard to have these deep red blooms instead of scarlet-orange like it's supposed to have. Lincoln right now is having machismo pride against Folklore. Usually Lincoln always is the first HT to bloom, but right now Folklore beat it and it's doing its male stubborness about wanting its own separate show...Nick, I specifically color coordinated the gorgeous deep florist red of L. to go with the candy-reverse sherbert orange/golden yellow reverse of F. to go together, but just like you say, they keep varying in bloom period. One gets spent, then the other rose starts up.... Nick one thing strange, I found out that I cannot keep large perennials alive once I transplant them, but NEVER EVER! have I had a rose go into transplant shock....I've had pretty old roses like Penny Lane that I've transplanted. You see I have too much energy spent on roses and can't have any time to care for transplanted large perennials save for watering every other day. Nick one of the problems is that I handwater EVERYTHING! and here we are having global warming to the MAX. Baby perennials do fine but not the big ones. Anyway, your plantings also sound gorgeous Nick! We are looking forward to seeing them in their splendor! I can just imagine the blanket of beautiful purples, lavender, and mauve going.......See MoreSale at A reverence for roses
Comments (106)Those look great GAgal! Sheila, I love your scenic pic of Crep!. We're still on roller coaster weather...was 80 last weekend, but supposed to have lows in the mid 30's this weekend. No hard freeze yet, but lots of stuff in the garden looking tired and ragged these days (including me...lol). Here are a couple of pics of the Mrs R M Finch I received from ARFR earlier this year. I wasn't familiar with the rose, and their website pic didn't really entice me, but my dad's initials were RMF. He's been gone for several years now, and mom still misses him terribly. So thought I would get the rose to grow for mom to enjoy as Mrs RMF (I left off the "inch" in Finch when telling her its name and take her little bouquets of blooms from it often). It has rarely taken a break from blooming since I got it. Here it is in August...2 months after receiving it (summer blooms turn from pink to white quickly): And here is a partial shot I took Monday morning before work (blooms hold their pink for a good while in cool weather):...See MoreIt’s happening!
Comments (14)Thanks for all the kind words! The purple plant along the fence, and also throughout the garden, is just nepeta, all Walkers Low catmint. It looks especially vivid at the moment. Hands down it my favorite perennial and a real workhorse of the garden. The other perennial, the white one I believe can be seen in some photos is white valerian. It has taken off this year. It does seem to spread somewhat aggressively so I’m a little worried. I do do not spray as one benefit of the arid climate I live in is a lack of fungal and pest issues. The hardest thing I deal with is the intense sun. My garden faces northwest and gets blasted by the afternoon sun which is quite strong here. Not all roses can handle the heat....See MoreMoses, Pittsburgh, W. PA., zone 5/6, USA
