Cherry tomato plants are rather "thin" compared to indeterminates so I do not sucker them, just use a sturdy cage and get tons of cherries without worries. I do sucker the lower suckers on my indeterminate plants as I like to encourage fewer but larger tomatoes. I'll semi-sucker the upper suckers on indeterminates (called the Missouri pruning method) to prevent excess smaller fruiting and still leave enough leaf growth for shading the later tomatoes to prevent sunscald....but getting back to the issue at hand I agree with mounding up more soil to cover the wounds on your plant if possible.
