From what I understand from our contractor the tile dictates the grout size. I should add that because your tiles are larger and they are going on the floor, you may want to consider a 1/8" grout line. If we were talking about a uniform subway tile back splash - 1/16" grout line works (and I think are more preferable on vertical surfaces). 1/16" seems lean for that tile size. If your tile has variation even by a minute amount you will want a larger grout line. I am sure others will say 1/16" is doable, but it makes me nervous because you are depending so much on the skill level of your installer. I have 12 x 24 in my home and I did 3/16" and am very happy with them and feel like it looks very appropriate with the size of the tile.

So, I have an older 2016 TCNA handbook. When I was remodeling several years ago and considering glass tile, I read about it in the handbook. There are some challenges that are unique with glass tile. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t choose it. It just means you should verify that the tile pro knows how to install it. Ask the tile pro what he does differently when working with glass tile. If he says “nothing,” then he’s not the right pro. He should be able to address how he handles these topics depending on your exact material: - waterproofing method - mesh tape, how to make it not show - thinset color, consistence and coverage - avoiding excess thinset, shrinkage and ghosting It’s been a while, so I don’t know all the details, I just remember reading a bit about it in the handbook, which I was reading so I’d know what questions to ask. You should also have the manufacturer’s instructions on hand. I love that tile. Good luck!

That is a beautiful tile that you selcted. I think the answer most people will agree on is to get a grout that blends in with your floor tile because there is so much pattern in your wall tiles. You shouldnt introduce another source of pattern on the floor, and thats what will happen if you use a darker grout. You picked a really beautiful vanity, its going to need gold pulls for sure. Are you going for gold hardware or a gold frame mirror? Most importantly, are you going to keep us updated on your progress?

The "Questions" are meant to be a field guide, to assist consumers in understanding the important qualifications. Our research indicates that some consumers (understandably) lack knowledge and experience when it comes to hiring qualified tile contractors. Some of the questions would likely be answered with basic research. The best Pros in the industry respect that a potential client has educated themselves. The worst will run for the hills as an expectation is being set that they might not be able to meet. Better yet, the more the consumer is educated and expects quality work, the greater the pressure for a contractor to seek the training and credentialing needed to perform the work to industry standards. It has to start with established expectations. And to your point, M Miller, while at this moment all trades are busy and consumers should plan ahead and be prepared to pay for quality that lasts, that is another piece of advice. And cpartist, #1 and #7 are extremely important in our experience. Speaking to #1, too many people without dedicated tile experience and training, and #7, experience with basic tile formats but not necessarily the tile chosen, like glass, natural stone, large format, etc. are resulting in problems. That being said, the vast majority of tile installations are meeting standards. We hear only about the "problems" on these forums...they are real and if consumers and the industry work together to expect qualified labor and results, we can continue to progress for the benefit of all.
