anyone regret buying a counter-depth refrigerator?
Comments (22)I have had a fridge in my unheated garage for about 6 years. I really needed the extra fridge space like others have mentioned. I live in western Washington where it gets fairly cold in winter and fairly hot in summer, but neither for extremely long periods of time. Here's what happens with mine. The temperature sensor is in the fridge apparently. In the winter, the garage can get cold enough that the fridge part of the unit doesn't need to run to maintain the correct temp. Therefore, the unit doesn't turn on the cold air. The freezer, however, needs the cold air to keep completely frozen. Sometimes certain things in the freezer get a little thawed out and then refreeze. I get some freezer burn occassionally. But the fridge part of the unit is completely fine. I don't have any issues with it during the summer, but I'm sure that thing must run hard to keep everything cool. This is a small trade-off for me as I absolutely need the extra fridge space. Oh, and as to the counter-depth issue. Have you checked the actual cubic foot size difference in the fridge spaces? Some counter-depths have almost as much as some of the standard depths. Comments (30)I can't help but wonder if hubby and I are just hobbits. Our first house had an overhang of 10" and that was our go to spot for meals. We rarely used the formal dining. When we moved into this house it had a peninsula that was 3 feet wide, a 12" base cabinet with a 12" overhang on all sides. Once again we ate all our meals there. We ripped out the old kitchen and put a new one in. Our island is 24" wide with seating on both sides (so basically a 12" overhang) and we eat 99% of our meals there. Our dining room is only a few feet away but we only use it for special occasions. Either we are all hobbits or we have become accustomed to a small overhang. Regardless, I understand WHY the minimum recommendation exists, I've just never seen it applicable in my own life. When we've had parties or get togethers, everyone crowds/crowded around the old peninsula and the new island, even after I directed attention to the table a few feet away....See MoreRecommended height between counter and bottom of upper cabinet?
Comments (27)I’m doing a renovation right now with an original ceiling height of 8’. With an added layer of sub floor, the final ceiling height is 95”. I elected to go with 36” uppers even though I want the cabinets to go all the way to the ceiling. 42” were an option, but it would result in a 17” clearance to the countertop. With under cabinet light i thought it would be far too crowded. The 36” cabinets will give a 23” counter to bottom of cabinet clearance. That seems high but it’ll give ample room for mixers, under cabinet lighting, etc. I’m also considering adding a floating wall mount shelf under the uppers at about 17” above countertop. I’d make the shelf maybe 8” deep to maintain the open workspace while adding display storage. Thoughts?...See MoreCounter-depth fridge recommendation
Comments (15)My 36" kitchenaid counterdepth works fine. One of my biggest regrets in my kitchen is getting the side-by-side style. I think the counterdepth part is essential; it's the sxs part that is the problem. The fridge seemed to have a lot of cu. ft., but it turns out not really true useable space because of the narrowness. At holidays, it's pretty impossible. Forget trays, or even a large turkey. I should have gotten a bottom-freezer configuration, or a 42" width. If you have a second fridge-freezer in the basement or garage, as many people do, you wouldn't have these problems and a side by side would be fine. People like side by sides because there is not as much bending and digging for the freezer portion. P.S. I am not one for panelling a fridge - it's just not my style. But if you want to panel your fridge, then you have to get an integrated built-in which is very expensive. A panelled fridge that is not integrated has an unfortunate look of the panelling stuck on, rather than being a part of the cabinetry. You didn't talk about whether you were going to panel or not, so I thought I'd mention....See Morechispa
