Remodeling Design Dilemma Storage & Closet

Closet back panel option

Hi everyone.

When installing new rods, shelves and drawers in a closet, is it necessary to add a panel behind the custom built unit? These are floor unit (not weightbearing), but fixed at studs. The closet wall will be redone and painted white, same color as the units. Thanks.

I would need to see the space to understand the question. Do you mean drywall on the studs or what?

Many custom closet systems are intended to be installed right over the drywall. Where the drawers are you won't see the walls, but you will see the wall behind open shelves and hanging clothing. I think it's only necessary to add a panel if you don't want to see the wall, but it seems money poorly spent to me. If you have wall damage, I would repair it and repaint before installing the new closet.

Why not a big pane of glass for the anteroom door with top and bottom rails and the stiles the same as the paneled doors. Three panel on the closet doors instead of six because of the narrow width. Proportion trumps number. The windows on the top stories of many period houses with 6-6 sashon the lower floors, are 3-3 with a proportion similar to the lites below. Some have been replaced with 6-6, resulting in a cluttered window with horizontal looking lites. Proportion is more important, and the width of those panels if you did 6 on such a narrow tall door would be sliver-like.

I'm sorry the Bosch 500 series only vents from the back or the right. They are fantastic products and our customers REALLY like them. In terms of some other options, I know the GE Profile: PFDS450ELWW vents left, right, and back. It's capacity is 7.5 cu ft. This is just off the top of my head, but don't fret! Cotehele, can you tell me the measurement of your gap from top of backer to countertop and the measurement from top to bottom of your backer panel (not to the floor)? I need to reorder the right size. Designer claims there is no error and wants me to pay twice. However from bottom of cabinets to countertop is 30" and designer ordered one that is over 30" (it would go below the cabinets even if there is no little gap.

In the old farm house I live in, the prior owners did not paint the back of the closet doors. Everytime, I see the unpainted door, I think to myself, what a half ass job ! Of course the person who decided not to paint the back of door, is long dead by now, so what difference does it make? I would paint it, in this type of real estate market, you do not want to take any chances on selling a house. If a potential buyer saw the unpainted door, it may ruin the sale.

Thanks for your replies; i edited my question to add that the walls will be new and freshly painted. So I agree that back panels are not needed. Stay well!
