Any advice for using Andersen 'jamb clips' for new-build windows?
Comments (0)We have a 1950's masonry house in Maine and we're replacing the windows. We're removing the old frames/bucks and want to maximize the RO. Andersen suggested using their jamb clips and simply setting them into the masonry opening. Sounds great- easy and straightforward. Is there anything I should know? Any tips or tricks or things to watch out for? (These are 400 series tilt wash double-hungs.) Thank you! Stacey...See MoreBuilding New Home--Need Window Advice?
Comments (14)Hi Central 79, Glad to hear you are narrowing down your window options -- it will be good for you to get the decision made so you can move on to the next big decision. I don't know anything about either the Windsor or Plygem windows, but hopefully you will get feedback from the window experts on this forum about these two brands. I know Integrity is a popular choice on this board. As per mixing different window materials, I think that would not be a problem with the attic windows, or any basement windows. We have vinyl in our basement, and on the north front face of our home. Before starting our addition we had recently replaced all the north facing windows with a high quality vinyl windows. When we chose to go with fiberglass for the addition, I was worried they would not go. However, this has not proven to be a problem given all the windows on one side of the house are the same. All of our windows are white like you are suggesting. For sure the vinyl windows we have have thicker mullions than the fiberglass, but they don't look that different. Now we don't have wood on the interior as you are considering as our fiberglass windows are fiberglass on the inside and outside -- not sure if that makes a big difference. I was unclear from your post where you were planning to mix the windows. Will different windows be in the same room? Will different windows be on the same side of the house viewed from the exterior? I do think the attic fixed ovals will not look out of place with your main floor fiberglass windows. Are you planning to mix two or three different kinds of windows? What do others think about mixing different windows? Carol...See MoreNeed advice re: new windows-black or white?
Comments (6)I think white windows look best on your house, and I wouldn't want mismatched colors so if some of the white is staying, I would definitely keep the windows white. If it were me, I would go with a more simple grid design. I don't understand what you propose to do with the front of your house. Can you post a mockup? I honestly think your house is fairly cute as is....See Moreadvice for updating our Ranch curb appeal? black windows are new
Comments (7)Thank you all for your input! Such great advice. I was ‘on the fence’ about painting the brick but now we will NOT paint it! I know what you mean about gray Jan and bright white Jinx. I’m relieved not to be spending 2 weeks painting :-). I agree about the problem gable and will start saving our pennies to dramatically change the front but in the meantime I will work on some of chiflipper’s suggestions! I like the landscaping inspiration photo Patricia—thanks! I plan to add lots of plants to the front but hadn’t thought about a wall like that, interesting option. Thanks for all the inspiration photos and ideas Jinx—depending on cost maybe cedar shakes could be a solution. Norwood, we don’t need the space in the gable. We enjoy our front porch and we want a greenhouse one day so maybe enclosing the front could create a plant space / generous foyer! Thanks again...See Moreworthy
