I had a similar issue. My house is half RED brick and half siding, similar to yours. Prior to renovating, I had white wide plank siding. I even had green shutters and a green door at one point. Because of the dominant color of the brick, I had a really hard time choosing the siding color. Although some say you should have the siding match the grout of the brick, I felt taupe was too modern for my house. I almost kept the white, but in the end we got a charcoal roof with Hardieboard grey siding. I'm very happy with it. My next project is the front stoop, walk and landscaping.

If your husband wants shutters, they need to be sized to look like they could close and cover the glass. Like houssaon mentioned, don't put them on the gable or large first floor windows. I guess there's some rule to match shutters with the entryway door, but in your case with the entryway sidelights in white, could probably go either way. But you didn't like the shutters you took down for some reason? What color were they? The windows are pretty so choose which color will highlight them best. Also the style of shutter should be considered for overall effect, like maybe a solid shutter so it doesn't compete with the style of your upper windows. Yard looks very nice, such a pretty lawn!
