What do you make of this PawPaw tree?

So.....approximately one or two years ago, my younger son was cutting the lawn as I had asked him to.
He bumped into several of my tree seedlings (I've got several seedlings in the backyard). As one could guess, it can be tricky to cut the lawn, having to avoid all those tree seedlings. Long story short, he lost his temper with one of my PawPaw tree seedlings & ended up kicking the seedling (in frustration). The tree snapped.
I figured the tree was dead. But then the next Spring, I noticed two new stalks/stems coming up from the same spot. Now, in that spot (I dug it up lightly) you can see the main stem/stalk with no tree coming from it.
Any thoughts on why it split into two new stems/stalks? Not that I'm complaining. They're clearly PawPaw tree leaves. I was even considering trying to separate them, but figured I'd post online for some feedback before I grab my shovel. I don't want to damage them.
Maybe leave well enough alone? I don't know. Thoughts?

It seems almost certain that you only have a single root system, not something you could practically divide.

Hi Everyone, It has now been two years since we bought our house. In between caring for our 18-month-old I am trying to establish a yard full of edibles. I would be very interested in a rooted cutting or established sapling from a fig tree (maybe a turkey fig ... something that doesn't get too big and that can survive in zone 7). I'm also interested in peach, plum and paw paw (I guess I would need two paw paw saplings). I've only just started to write up my "Haves" list, and I've also just ordered a ton of veggie and herb seeds, including a number of heirlooms. So please ask if there is something that you are looking for. The plants that I currently have to trade include June-bearing strawberries, a thinner clumping green bamboo that grows 14-15 feet tall and makes an excellent privacy fence (the shoots are also edible), English thyme, senna, and probably also cherry blossom tree saplings. ottawan, Sorry I had forgotten about me making this posting. The results where not to promising. I ended up with four of trees from the same source. I stored them in the same way and in the same place for winter. A friend of mine grafted a small scion from other paw paws on each of the four trees while they where still in the small pots. Spring arrived and I decided to plant two of the in the yard. One died the other just sent up a sucker shoot from ground level. The other two I left in the small planting pots. It looks like the one is doing nothing and the other is sending up shoots from the ground but it also sent out new buds that I kept breaking off because of having the graft on it. The graft never took so I removed it. In fact all of the grafts failed. I keep watering both of them to see what happens down the road a bit. Sorry I made you wait for results. Lou

I just wanted to resurrect this thread by sharing an interesting blog page about a native patch and a pawpaw enthusiast that is local to Massachusetts. I found a like-minded individual who has posted some interesting info on pawpaws and I thought I would share. Yes they are Asimina triloba. I planted them where I have sprinklers and soaker hoses. They will get plenty of moisture from those during the spring and summer. I just hope we continue to have rains during the winter and early spring so the roots will get a good start. I am glad that I got them in the grown this early in the winter. It is amazing how those hosts of the television garden shows can get so much done and never break a sweat or get dirty. (This applies to those cook show hosts too.)

Yes. That’s just one tree. The orginal trunk sprouted from dormant buds after it was broken off. Same principle as pinching out a plant to make it bushier.

I think you need to surround young trees with mulch rings to keep the turf back and facilitate lawn care. A wire cage would be a good idea as well.

first.. remove all grass for 2 feet around.. and mulch properly.. and you will NEVER have mowing or weedwhip issues...

next.. with no insult to the root mass.. no otherwise healthy tree will die from cutting it down.. no matter how you do it.. e.g. angry child.. lol ..

trees can not be divided.. and very ver few can be rooted from cuttings.. its rarely possible.. but not probable ....

if you wont one healthy tree ..... prune out one or the other TRUNKS ...

or leave it be so you have double the crop.. the bottom line is you want more fruit.. or a pretty tree ...

on my 5 acres.. i mow with a riding mower ... and all my trees have a 3 foot ring around them.. so i can mow at about 15 miles per hour ... and they are all eventually pruned up to at least 6 feet .. so i dont poke my eyes out...

if YOU dont build the mulch ring .... then you are not allowed to complain about the children ...
