Living Room help
We have a 2 story Living room and I have no clue what to do with it anymore. We have painted, added curtains, and changed up the pillows to cozy it up. But what do I do with the fireplace wall? I hate the cutouts and thought shelves would be a good fix but that seems cluttered now. I have a massive blank wall on the other side and no idea what to do with it. It feels drab and cold, but this is the heart of the house and I want it to feel inviting and warm. You can see it from every door you walk in. Would bamboo blinds be better?

10 months agoTall spaces require larger items. Everything you have is too small for the scale of the room. Longer console table on the wall where short one is now. Large art. Taller end tables with larger lamps. Take wreaths down and leave that area empty. Work decor at room height. Shelves are cluttered. Take desk lamps off cabinets. I would put 1 piece on each shelf. Colorful pillows. Look at local galleries for art. Or try minted.com

10 months agoI agree with jck910. Two shelves over consoles that aren't real built-ins look insubtantial, while at the same time the shelves look cluttered. Real built-ins with different molding over the fireplace (or clad the fireplace section with stone) would look more intentional and cohesive. If built-ins aren't in the budget, see if you can find consoles or bookshelves that fit the openings better. On the opposite wall you need art - one very large piece or an arrangement of several pieces.

Comments (3)What are the big red scratch-outs? Furniture you aren't keeping? First step is the couch, second is the rug and third is the paint. Paint color should be based on fabrics and textiles (seating and rug) in the room. It can be custom blended, but the furniture is set in stone. When you shop for the rug, it should be 2-4 feet wider than the sofa. Slip it under the front 1/3 of the sofa and have it extend past the ends by 1-2 feet. You can use painter's tape on the floor to figure out the best size for your sofa and room. I'd replace the dining rug too, so the two are coordinated. Comments (11)Start by making the t v wall more important. Using the wall paint color, paint a wider (wider the better) console with it. Inspiration photo. Add some (real) greenery, put in a wicker plant stand to work with the accent color in the rug. Scout around for LED battery powered wall sconces in brushed brass. Move the rug and the sectional a bit more to the right so you have more of a path by the window to get in and out of the room. Good place for tripod floor lamp. You can make this off-side work if you center the new console on the wall, but install the t v more to the right of the wall so it aligns with the center of the sectional. Comments (16)Something like this, maybe? I hope the plan is to scale; with these large sofas, inches matter! I used the 90-inch sofa length but didn't know its depth or the dimensions of the chairs, so those are guesses (40 inches for sofa depth, 36x36 for chairs). I found the bookcase online so used its actual dimensions (lower right corner of plan). Guests enter the main seating area (assuming the upper right is the entry), with the sofa L facing them. (You can still sit across from guests by using the chairs and the sofa opposite them.) I chose a nesting coffee table that can be pulled out when needed to serve a crowd. The traffic lane from entry to dining room is now outside of the conversation area, leading past an art wall. The fireplace corner is for one-on-one conversation and for reading, with lamps (a table lamp on the sofa console and a floor lamp behind the other chair), the bookcase, and an ottoman to put your feet up. You could add small tables between the chairs and the windows to hold your refreshments. And here's a rendering: I used a subtle metallic silver (paper or paint) on the ceiling for the depth that the softly reflective surface gives. The ceiling then looks less flat and lid-like. The wall color is one of the lighter stone colors from the fireplace, used on the beam as well as the walls, and I did add crown molding to both walls and beam. This shows a darker floor because the dramatic sofas seemed to need its contrast, but I realize that I'm looking at one room only, not the rest of the house that I assume will get the same flooring. I did use large art, because to my eyes that scale holds its own better with the large, assertive sofas, but you could do a gallery wall somewhere if you prefer (just make sure the total arrangement is large enough). I used an antique arched window frame between the windows (echoing the curved backs of the white chairs) because I like the contrast a touch of age adds to a contemporary room. The rug is a soft abstract in neutrals and gray/blue. For the fireplace area, if the stone can be matched, running it to the ceiling would also help the room to feel taller. The ottoman between the two tufted chairs is shown in a neutral in the plan, but it might need to repeat the deep blue for color balance in the room. Or you could bring in the blue in a smaller rug (5x7?) under the chairs, set at the fireplace angle. Choose one that plays well with the larger rug. If you add lighting, or at least paint shelves to match woodwork. And maybe paint the cabinets too. Decor, scale up the size and reduce quantity.

9 months agoWe might suggest removing everything on the walls above the TV area and just doing two large pieces of artwork on either side of the fireplace or declutter the current shelves. The blank wall could also house a large piece of artwork.

A large statement chandelier helps pull the ceiling down.
The window coverings pictured here look like those pleated shades that disappear when up. That would be a great window covering solution, especially if you could tie your upper and lower windows together with trim work.
As mentioned in the comments, large scale and arrangement of furniture is key, anchoring the gathering space with a large soft rug. Any art or mirror or greenery need to be scaled to the space it occupies.
