I would also like to recommend Darlow's enigma. It is a superb rose that blooms in my yard with lots of shade under a tree. It has lots of thorns, but that is not a problem where I have it. Kew Gardens from David Austin is another similar looking rose that might work for you if you like this look. The Austin is an almost thornless variety and the flowers a bit larger, zero die back in my zone 7. Here is a baby Kew G on its first year. The new foliage is very pretty. Sorry I don't have a picture of my Darlows, but after seeing Paul's picture, there is nothing I could add to express how beautiful this rose can be.

No "great" updates, honestly. I did trim it down a lot earlier this year, and it definitely looks better for it! Now that I know it's OK with it, I'll do a better job of trimming this winter. Since posting this, my mom passed, my dad got COVID which led to end stage pulmonary fibrosis, and one of my dogs passed... so it's been a rough year :-( Obviously I haven't had the time, energy, or money to focus on the gardens like I wanted. I have 2 sunshine ligustrum in another section of the landscape, though, and I'm kinda thinking about pruning them and then planting the cuttings all around the front of the butterfly bush (leaving the back open so that I can get in and prune the butterfly bush easily). That wouldn't cost anything, they're drought-tolerant so I wouldn't have to worry about watering them after the first year, and the evergreen yellow would offset the purple colors well. I had to Google the vitex... wow, that's going to be gorgeous! I'm going to have to look in to that, I'd never heard of it :-O

Thanks for the reply, we did think the fruit looked a bit ‘conker like’. The leaves are also reminiscent of our chestnut trees, so I think you may well be correct! thank you 😊

Thanks, one and all, especially iochroma. You hit it. Nice one. Carol. Further research does show that it is more similar to Macadamia than I thought/remembered. All Macadamia I saw in Australia were cultivated, so overall appearance did throw me. macranthos. The garden where this is, Morrab Gardens, is full of allsorts of plants, with many from Aus/NZ, and other places, eg Wollemia nobilis, Grevillias , Phyllocladus, Puyas, and a 30'+ Metasequoia. I pop down there every few months, and ALWAYS spot something I hadn't seen before. They did attempt, at one point, a couple of Banksia, but they expired. I suspect that they suffered from phosphorus toxidity. A pity as I love the Banksias. Temperatures, on average, are lows of 4C (39F), but -4C has been recorded. Many of their plants would NOT like that temperature, but being only 150m from the sea they probably wouldn't get that low.
