Single bowl sink with no other prep sink--your thoughts
Comments (18)In reference to your 30 inch base question... I have a 23 inch SS single-bowl in a 30 inch base and opted for this size because I have a small kitchen and preferred counter space instead of a larger sink (no prep sink either). I measured and found that the sink depth (mine comes to a bit over 9 inches including countertop) - and my choice of a high-arc faucet with a pull-down - was just as important as the width of the sink. I cook daily - and bake often - and wanted to be able to clean pots/pans/cookie sheets easily - which I can do with my 23 inch. I quickly move DW items into the DW so don't use my sink to stack/store so much. Like artemis above, I also have over-sink colanders that I love to use as I do lots of veggie rinsing/prepping and moving the over-sink items around on a single-bowl is super easy. I think it all comes down to use and personal preference. Note how you use your current sink - if you love it - keep it! Comments (20)Our prep sink is 15-3/4" x 15-3/4" x 7-1/2" (plus 1-1/8" granite depth = 8-5/8" total depth). It's big enough to work in and big enough to fit all my colanders and all my pots for filling, although I find filling the pots on the counter much easier. When we were shopping for a sink, our KD told us any sink less then 12" in each direction would be useless as a prep sink...now that I have my sink & have worked with it, I have to agree. Actually, I might even say any that's not at least 15" in each direction would be useless b/c I don't think a sink any smaller than mine would be as useful for prepping. You have to have room for your hands + whatever you're working with inside the sink. Our sink is in a 36" corner sink base. In a "regular" sink base, a sink base at least 17" wide would be fine. Comments (11)well, i'm kinda thinking as a chef/ prep point of view.. so i don't know what kind of prep work you will be doing. Like my examples, cleaning a fish or washing vegetables, 'high arc' faucet are more convenient. yes, the high arc is to accommodate tall pots, but it's also basically a 'pull out' faucet but instead of the hose hiding under the sink, it's exposed with a springy thing. it's like a 'coiled' electric cord.. so you have all those hose and it let you reach far when you pull the springy thing down. it won't be splashy if you adjust the water volume down when you wash delicate food, instead of more of a full volume for rinsing dishes. So the Brizo is a pretty good prep faucet because it is high and it can pull DOWN very far (better then pull OUT). what i'm just not sure is how smooth and easy it retract.. esp after couple years. If you already have a cleaning sink, and the prep sink is in a central place in the kitchen, i'll still get a 'high arc' but a more elegant one.. .. oh, ya,, when i talk about 'high arc' I mean the ones with the springy thing.. not just a solid fixed high arc faucet. Comments (24)First off, back to the original question because I think you only got one answer on that. We have 2 feet between the range and our prep sink. An extra half foot to foot would be nice, but that is what we had available with a big prep sink, ~20" by 20". For over 20 years before we redid our kitchen, our prep sink was 10" by 10" - the same size as the sink in our wet bar but with a disposal. Yes, that is small but because it was in a convenient location for it, we did almost all our fruit and vegetable prep there. A prep sink doesn't have to be huge to be useful. Bigger than that would be good, but it doesn't have to be 18" or more wide. A 13" by 18" can be a very nice size - big enough to have a bowl or colander holding veg you are rinsing or soaking but still leave some clear space. Green Designs suggested that it should fit your biggest stock pot, but I don't feel that is necessary. I don't ever recall putting my stock pot in mine. I fill it on the counter or sometimes on the burner using the pull out faucet. (It just reaches because the sink is 2 feet from the range top.) Looking at your kitchen, I think the most convenient layout would moving the clean up sink to where the range is and putting the range on the wall between the windows - where your plans show the cleanup sink moving. You don't need to get rid of any of the windows if you do that and since it is an external wall, moving the vent there should be easy. A prep sink could go in the cabinet you show a D. That makes for a very good flow for preparation - produce from the fridge or the counter to the prep sink, then prepped between the sink and the range in front of the window. Plenty of storage for pots, pans and prep tools around the range and prep sink. The sink, DW and dish storage cabinets on the wall by the dining room are convenient for setting the table and after meal clean up. It can also be used as a secondary prep area such as you wanted for making lunches while someone else prepares breakfast. You said that moving the range to that wall would require more new cabinets, but I don't see why. Existing cabinets could be detached and moved so it shouldn't take any more new ones than what your are contemplating already....See Morelucky998877
