Comments (11)Thanks! The light in those pictures is really awful, and I took them on my iphone, so they don't look half as vibrant as they do IRL. Errant, that is indeed an umbrella stand holding the pool cues in the corner..... it is a metal piece from a company called Worlds Away and is hand painted with the words "Come again another day." I'll try to take a close up of it later on, but I don't think that particular one is sold any longer. I saw a wonderful ceramic umbrella holder in the Birch Lane catalog very recently and I'm sure other places must have them....See MorePartial remodel of upstairs bathrooms, REVEAL
Comments (6)Yes, the cabinets were wood. They were in good shape so I didn't see the need to replace them. I probably shouldn't have said "refacing" because he didn't actually remove the front pieces of the cabinet. He added some wood for the new hinges to attach to. He made new doors and drawer fronts, and installed full extension glides and and soft close hinges. The old hinges were on the outside. This picture shows the piece of wood that he added. Without that there would have been nothing to screw the new hinge into. I think if we had actually refaced, the hinges would have attached to the side of the cabinet, but I'm not sure about that. Maybe this same type of added would still would have been required because the side of the cabinet is not very thick. The office cabinet needed some extra reinforcing. He added some wood to the inside of that one at the top. He was worried that the granite installers might damage the cabinet if they pushed and pulled on the granite or set it down too hard. He still asked me to warn the installers to be extra careful on that one because he couldn't reinforce it as much as he wanted to. It was difficult to place the wood where he wanted to because it would have interfered with the drawers and he had only so much room between the front of the cabinet and where the sink would go. I can't say that I totally understand what he did to reinforce that one, but it all worked out. If it had gotten damaged, I guess he could have just rebuilt the whole thing, but thankfully that wasn't necessary. My goal was to keep it as simple as possible and I'm thankful that it all worked out that way. This project went so smoothly I can hardly believe it, a welcome change from my kitchen experience! Can't wait to tackle the master bathroom, but have to save up for a while first....See MoreWallpaper for shower?
Comments (7)sochi, This link shows how it's applied and mentions price. Looks like around 20usd per sq.ft. AFAICT (as far as I can tell) Not sure how much installation would cost but it looks about the same skill level as an expert wallpaper hanger. I would love to see this used in a shower with tile wainscoting and wallpaper above the rail. I may think about this for my kitchen backsplash. Let us know if you find out more about it. http://www.behangfabriek.com/c-3076928/wet-bathroom/...See MoreUpdate on wet system wallpaper for shower
Comments (44)Hi again, he is travelling so I just spoke to him in the phone. LMK if this doesn’t make sense. The silicone seal is the last step and primarily is to protect the wallpaper, not to prevent water infiltration, although of course it helps. First step is the cement board - wall and deco says you can install over regular drywall, probably okay but my contractor put in cement board appropriate for a wet space. Then waterproof Kerdi (Schluter?) membrane covering pretty much everywhere, overlapping appropriately. Wall and Deco have a water proof product that is applied to seams (and the whole wall I believe). This requires three coats over a number of days. Finally the silicone, which my contractor recommends be reapplied or touched up every year or so to provide additional protection the very bottom of the wallpaper. This video about Kerdi membrane and Kerdi band may help. We’ve been using the shower for a year now, still love it and no signs of wear or damage. Good luck....See MoreLynette Hauptman
