We'd still be open to removing them if it weren't for the tile we've already installed around them on the floors. Removing the column plinths would mean an awkward tile grout line in the floor at each of the 4 column locations. My concern for the space would be that decorating "around" the columns and arches will be even more awkward and hampering. However safe and less ornate, whatever striking, beautiful elements -- lighting, furniture, art, accessories -- you put anywhere in the vicinity will be overwhelmed and minimized by the columns and arches. Without the competing (and winning) arches and columns in the room, a group of lights, whether glass or linen drum pendants, over the right table could be stunning. You can spend money trying to decorate "around" something like arches and columns, but in my experience you'd spend more on such an unsuccessful effort than on just removing the awkward and unhelpful element and moving forward with a cleaner slate.
