Can someone help to identify what is the problem with my rose?

The rose is a climbing David Austin. I planted it couple months ago as a barefoot. The bottom leaves are green and healthy but the leaves on the long canes look like the photo.

Comments (23)Well, this is the lowest tech advice you can follow. You can find it discussed here on GW if you search "spider mites". The mites love hot, dry and dusty conditions. Your plants are water stressed, that's a given. Get out early in the mornings with a water wand and drench the plants with plain old water. The water wand permits to to flush the under sides of the leaves where you'll find the webs and most of the mites. Wash them really well and repeat this a couple of times a week at first, then you can probably taper off. You'll be cleaning off the dust, dirt, chemicals, smog and bugs with their webs as well as hydrating the plants. Leaves take in water just as they release it to the air. Bathing your roses will jump start them like you won't believe. You'll drown many of the insects and make conditions so unfavorable for many others, they'll leave. Why put any more chemicals on the plants or in your garden during this heat when what will most likely be the most beneficial and effective is good old fashioned water? You do need a water wand for best results. You need to be able to reach inside the plant and thoroughly rinse off the backs of the foliage. You should ask first on the GW forum for the particular kind of plant. And don't believe the first poster who responds, because we can make mistakes too. Though, if we let a reply stand without further comments, that's probably a tacit approval. It's really important not to panic and apply a barrage of remedies before you have a good diagnosis. Also, when you post a question, it's important to give a general idea of where you live, because pests and diseases are regional, rainfall and winter damage can play a role, etc. For example, a diagnosis of scale insects on roses would be more likely if you are in Southern California, Hawaii, or Miami. But rose midge, suggested above, doesn't exist in those places. One thing I can say for certain, the purple spots with lighter centers are either cercospora spot or spot anthracnose, both fungal diseases that usually don't require control measures. Also, there may well be some spray damage, because homemade and "organic" sprays are rather likely to damage plants if not used carefully. Large purple smears are often the result of spray damage. Comments (6)Could also be some kind of black spot. There are many strains of it depending on which part of the country you're in. It's really hard for me to tell the difference between BS, cercospora and anthracnose so I try to find a fungicide that will work for all of them and use that. Look for the Bayer Disease Control for Roses and that should do the trick. Stay away from the combined products that say 2 in 1 or 3 in 1. You can spray with copper, but if you’ve already had fruit from it then you might consider just starting over: heat-treating seeds apparently kills the disease, though planting in a different spot and choosing a resistant variety is probably safer. 10 months agoTried to take photo at ground level but it’s hard to see.. I think it is mildew… do you think it’s too late in the season to prune the canes? also curious about the shape of the plant. The DA’s I got last year grew into a bushy plant but the two DA’s I planted this year are growing oddly with a mass of leaves at the very bottom and long spindly canes.
