HELP! Should I paint my cabinets black or cream or taupe?
Comments (38)"I sure hope you like black. There are some of us who would not even consider it." I take no personal offense at that statement, but it's very narrow. Isn't that what makes the world more interesting...diversity? My previous kitchen was beautiful with matte black painted maple lower cabinets. I had no uppers...just art hanging in that space. the cabinets weren't heavy looking, nor did they make the room too dark. It was a beautiful space.....and understated...quite like the proverbial black cocktail dress, a classic. I had tons of natural light...one solid wall of windows and my wood floors were oak with no stain so they weren't dark. I would agree it depends on the kitchen, style of house, countertop, lighting, etc. Decora cabinets used to send potential clients over to see my kitchen anytime someone was considering black. I wish I could post photos, but I only have the real estate tour and you can't snag stills from it. The house sold in 45 days during the worst of the housing crunch. The buyers specifically said they loved the kitchen at the act of sale. So there are also those of us who would and have chosen black. Like everything else...it depends on the big picture....See MoreWall color to bring out brown in taupe cabinets
Comments (6)Well, then all we can do is guess. a brown undertone gray will bring out the brown tones. or a black undertone gray. . no blue or green or pink or lavender undertones. then again, you could use dark tan colors, or sage greens. but this is all a guess since we have no idea what it looks like....See MoreHelp make taupe cabinets look gray!
Comments (7)You have looked at it while it stands vertically, right? the sample of Formica for cabinets? And when you checked whether it works with countertop, you kept countertop sample perpendicular to it? Just making sure, since samples should be looked at, in the order they'll be installed. The lighting in stores and in one's home often is dramatically different. Also each house-has its unique lighting and other things that surround a color and change our perception of it. I think-if cabinets and counter work together, and with the flooring, that's already much less problemaric. Agree with others to wait, until all is there, for backsplash, and look into different lighting. Harmonious things, even if not exactly what we envisioned, irritate us much less, than things that seem to fight each other As long as it works, even if it's warmer look than the "cooler" one you were hoping for-you can introduce then brighter, crispier so to say, "cleaner" or cooler colors with styling. Not with semi-permanent elements that will indeed make it look creamier-but small easy movable things....See MoreTaupe kitchen cabinets look purple with red runner
Comments (19)To downplay a color tone, don't pair it with a high contrast color. Find a rug that has a color scheme that has taupe and similar colors. The high contrast calls attention to the rug, which you may like, but on the flip side, calls attention to the tones in the cabinets that you don't want highlighted. Downplay with similar tones on the color wheel, not across. Also, a more neutral rug will show less dirt, if that is a factor. I hate carpeting in the kitchen because I am a super messy cook but also the constant cleaning. I only have one by the sink to rest my feet....See MoreJuliet
