Veggie Tales April 2023
Comments (87)Cindy it's been raining here for about the past 12 hours for a grand total of 2.25". Like you we really needed it and the ground has soaked it up with ease. Sat will be dry for a brief break before getting more rain on Sunday at maybe another inch. Nothing violent here, no high winds or lightning, this should end the pollen season for the most part. The week ahead looks coolish with the lowest temp predicted at 44F by Weds morning, otherwise sunny with daily highs around 70. The garden is very happy today....See MoreVeggie Tales >>> May 2023
Comments (68)Jumping outside between the showers it looks like the peas have 1-2 more pickings before they're exhausted. 2 plantings of late corn will replace them along the trellis. The broccoli is also kaput now, and will compost their remains tomorrow. The remaining 4 purple cabbages are very close to harvest so that row will become free for some back-up watermelon plants. Looking a late season for melons this year. The squash is blooming now and the cukes are just starting to produce both male & female buds. The sweet potatoes are showing the beginnings of vines and the 2nd corn is 3" high now as the 1st corn hits the 18" mark. The bush beans are now blooming so we'll switch from shelling peas to snapping beans soon. The asst cantaloupes (Ambrosia, Sugar Cube, Honeydew, & Crenshaw) are faring better than the watermelons at this point but each are still in the pre-vining stage. The tomatoes are setting nicely and the peppers are starting to bloom as the 1 eggplant gets its act together. All Lettuces are still sweet too....can you tell it's still raining outside? ;-)...See MoreVeggie Tales >>> July 2023
Comments (39)John, I may need to re-think my ele wiring levels. The posts that come with the ele fence set-up are about 4' tall and have 4 clips to string up the wiring. The lowest clip is about 6" from the bottom and has about 12" between each clip so there are large gaps between each wire. Deer can easily hop over 4' so it's not much of a deterrent to them unless they touch a wire with their nose. Since the lowest wire is 6" above the ground then small critters can easily slip under that wire. The ele shock is activated about once every other second with a brief gap in-between each ele surge so a carefully timed critter can slip through without being shocked. I like that 1.5" separation idea so maybe I can rig the lowest 2 wires at 1.5" and 3" heights above the ground. The main problem would be weeds interfering at that low level and also wire sag allowing the wire to touch the ground. Your thoughts on installing the wire just prior to crop production would keep critters from becoming too used to its presence, but many critters like rabbits & groundhogs would be happy to just munch on the early plant foliage....See MoreVeggie Tales >>> October 2023
Comments (11)Sounds easier than my caging Wayne, thanks. Today I used my long fruit picking pole and scooped up another 15 perfect huge pears, not a blemish on them and they were on the shady side of the tree so were still a light green. We have 3 watermelons in the garage fridge and as they are vacated they'll be replaced with more pears, hope to have about 70 in the fridge to last up to New Years, maybe? Of these 3 trees there must be at least 200 nice looking pears waaaay out of reach. We've been giving them away like crazy but many end up in the com[post or as deer snacks late at night. The deer are welcome as they save me a lot of picking up and it distracts them from the fall crops. Sorry to say that the last tomatoes are in the pipeline now, the late plants took it on the chin during last weeks stretch of cool drizzle, late blight has run rampant now. Peppers are still going strong, I pulled the eggplant, had enough, ha, must have picked over 15 from that one plant this year. The persimmons are getting a slight blush to em', probably another month to go on those. Carrots, collards, cabbages, and turnips all look good so far. I watered the late sweet potatoes today and the rest of the fall crops will get a good soaking tomorrow....See Morevgkg Z-7 Va
