Feature wall with fireplace remodel
I need advice on what to do with this wall. We already pulled off the dinky mantle and ugly tile and plan to insert an electric fireplace and new mantel surround. We will be installing the tv above it. I was given the idea to install millwork in squares to cover the wall and paint it all white and add crown molding at the top. I am considering this, but the rendering (below) seems so busy to me. What do you think? Do the squares have to match the size of the squares in the window? I think that seems small and adds to how busy it will become. This is a 17.5 foot tall wall and it opens to the kitchen. Do you like the millwork idea? Should I do much larger squares and ignore the windows? Should I consider some other pattern rather than matching squares? (The cardboard mockup is approx size of new mantle and the criss cross tape is the size of new insert.)

Comments (13)I'm not sure how board and batten will work with your wonderful rough plaster. B&B (or flat-panel wainscot) is really more consistent with colonial, shaker, or arts-and-crafts/craftsman house styles. Your home, from what little the pictures show, is more storybook or English cottage style. Are those coved ceilings in the living room? Keep the wainscot in the bathroom, but don't spread it into the rest of the house -- it won't work. The fireplace is wonderful and unusual. I agree with the others that a heavier mantel shelf set it off beautifully. You have a charming home as it is. Comments (2)There is too much going on with that wall (windows, HVAC, FP, TV) to paint it as an accent wall. I hope you've removed the cornices and have found hardwood under the carpet. Comments (2)You could paint it a very deep navy blue, which will help the TV blend into the wall. Then repeat that color with some new drapes. Comments (2)Here's a pic of the paint color you're considering, below. Will you end the color in the left corner where the shelves are? You're planning to do that niche, above the fireplace and the niches above the armoire on the right? I think it may look dark above the built-ins flanking the fireplace, as they look dark now. 10 months agoI think doing the whole wall is too much. Look at the pictures in Houzz under the heading "fireplaces." Most of them show paneling only over the fireplace. You don't have to take it all the way to the ceiling either.
