Did you actually have to? BIL and nephew are personal injury lawyers in Fargo and RARELY does a case actgually get into the courtroom.

I was called for yesterday too, but the night before, I got a text saying I was excused. Thanks goodness as I have a cold and really didn't want to go. They say if you're sick, you should call and reschedule, but I didn't. If I did, then they'd definitely call me and make me show on the new day. This way, as they cancelled, it's back to random whether I'll be called again. Phew!

Arcy, the way it works in our state is you are called to the jury pool and you have to show up at the court house. Once there, they pull as many as they need to cover the jury trials for that day. You may have to sit there for half the day before they decide if they need any more for the afternoon or not. If you get selected, then you serve on that jury until the case is over and then you're done. If you don't get selected that day but you appeared at the court house, you are done. They can't call you again for at least 3 years. So whether or not a specific case goes to trial is not relevant. It's about having the jurors needed for the cases that are already on the schedule to go to trial.

Since we've moved so much with the military we've never stayed long enough to be called anywhere. The first and only time I've gone to a civilian jury pool was when we were in Fort Worth. I served on a jury in the Air Force for a court martial.

Fortunately I work for a nonprofit that pays regular wage for 2 weeks of service and doesn't require jury day wage in return. I really hope they call me; I want that experience.

It's not really about serving when called, which so many people rarely get or choose to do. It's being the arbiter of judgment for someone whose future is in your hands. They deserve your sound decision making as you would hope someone would do for you. It sounds nebulous, and it is an imposition, but I've never heard anyone say they regret serving.

I've only been called once but it was for federal jury duty so I was "on call" for two months, meaning hang around for two months and don't plan anything you can't cancel. The first week I was notified that I wasn't needed that week. The second week I was told to show up and then the night before I was to be there I was notified that I didn't have to and that I was completely done - didn't have to hang around the rest of the two months. I was relieved not to do it as it was in the middle of Covid and at the courthouse in Minneapolis - two things I really didn't want to be exposed to at the time.

I was on a trial once as an alternate. It was very frustrating as I had to be there and hear the whole case, but then I couldn't deliberate as I was an alternate and not needed. And boy did I have a lot to say!

I've been called twice. First was Federal, I wasn't chosen and sent home on Day 1. The second time was for the County, and by random draw I was selected for the Grand Jury. It was very interesting, some cases extremely disturbing, but I was glad to do my part. We were told because we had served on a Grand Jury, if called again, they would strike us Day 1. Having recently moved to another state, I received a letter to go online and answer questions for future jury duty. I would do again in a heartbeat.

I had jury duty on Thursday but it was cancelled the night before. Big relief since the last time I went it was much like Annie described. We can defer duty for a year, which I did last year and requested the delay until June 1, so they wasted no time calling me up. Hopefully they won't call before I turn 70 in two years and I can be excused for age, but I expect to be summoned again this year.

I'd rather be called in the summer than in the winter when the weather might be bad. It takes me 40 min to get to the courthouse, and we have to park a couple of blocks away and walk.

I've been called (and chosen) more than half dozen times in all weather and have served on two murder cases. Somehow our prosecutor those years just loved me - and I was very tired of listening to that man, couldn't stand him and his theatrics. A couple of lawyers I talked to at a social event later told me they couldn't believe I'd been chosen for more than one murder case, that shouldn't have happened. I finally asked my doctor to write a letter I could have on file at the courthouse saying she would rather I didn't serve again. She happily complied. I'm all for civic service but felt I'd done my share.

DH - much more social and outgoing than me - is summoned like clockwork just about every 24 months. He knows so many people in the community he is always excused during voir dire.

My mother, my sister...never have received a jury duty notice.

I’ve been called to jury duty a couple of times, but have never gotten to sit on a case. I got pretty far the first time, but the defendant’s attorney removed me bc the defendant was a police officer in a small municipality in our county, and I was the assistant town manager in another small municipality in our county. I found it a bit of a stretch bc the case was civil (get this-a husband was suing him for alienation of affection bc he was having an affair with his wife-yes, that was (is?) a thing in our state!😳) and had nothing to do with his job. 🤷‍♀️ Anyway, I think I would make a fabulous juror, and want to serve now that my children are in college and I have the time! 😊

I served on one and a half cases. The first was a rape case where we found the defendant guilty. The half case was for drug dealing. The defendant was offered a deal, but didn't take it until the jury walked into the courtroom. The defendant took one look at us and opted for the deal. The jury was dismissed before we could be sworn in.
