When I was "oldifying" my previous house, a 1994 Cape, I shopped at Bradbury & Bradbury (bradbury.com) for wallpaper, Rejuvenation for lighting, vintagetub.com (FANTASTIC customer service) for plumbing fixtures, ebay for accessories, Horton Brasses for door pulls. Now we've bought an old house (1900 Eastlake Victorian, albeit stripped naked and modest to begin with) I'll be back to all those companies, and soon I'll be headed down to Architectural Salvage in Exeter NH for parts for our broken mortise locks (I may have to buy the whole lock and scavenge the parts we need; it would probably make more sense to replace the whole thing but I'm sentimental about the parts that have been there for 107 years). He's a little expensive though. In a few months I'll go up to Old House Parts in Kennebunk ME, and check out the rumors of a Habitat ReStore in Portland (Maine, that is). jfpegan.com (who also sells on eBay as jfpegan) sells restored antique and handmade repro lighting at good prices. I picked up two slightly battered pan chandeliers at a yard sale this last week (15 bucks for both!) and when I'm a little more flush I'll send them off there for repair and restoration, which they also do. I'm not sure if I've seen anyone mention Bathroom Machineries (deabath.com). Sort of a mediocre website but they have things no one else does. Sadly, where I live (SE NH) the Arts-and-Crafts-that's-not-Mission ;-) furniture I love most is a rare critter, at least on the lower budget end. I've heard the Skinner "Discovery" auctions in Bolton MA have cheaper, less-fancy things; it's about an hour and a half drive but I'd rather bring something wonderful home from that than something from Ikea, which is the same distance in a slightly different direction.

We got our backsplash tile at Walker Zanger in Mount Vernon. (They have a store in the city, but the service was atrocious there, as opposed to Mount Vernon, where it was excellent). We picked the backsplash before we picked the cabinets. Since I wanted 2 color painted cabinets, I thought it would be easier to find the tile I liked first and then get the exact shades of cabinet I wanted based on the tile. But for our bath I did the opposite and brought in samples of the vanity wood and flooring, and we chose our vanity backsplash tile from there. So I think it could work fine either way. Anyway, the people at Walker Zanger were really helpful and showed me a lot of good options that I wouldn't otherwise have considered.

I only noticed one person specifying where they buy wine. We buy ours at Beverage Warehouse, which is very close to us and easy to get to - less than 10 minutes, and just off of the Marina Freeway. They have an excellent selection of wines, and so we stock up when we go there, which is maybe once every two months. We do not always have wine with meals, but there are certain times when we do. Our favorite wines are Sangiovese, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir, and Côtes du Rhône (both red & white). We also keep Cabernet Sauvignon on hand but it is not really a favorite. I mention this because I have noticed that in certain parts of the country, wine is not available in grocery stores. I think I noticed this in Philadelphia - at least we were directed to a specialty liquor store when we were there. I also remember that in Washington State, one had to go to a state owned liquor store, similar to what I had to do in British Columbia. In BC, the government would threaten to have liquor strikes, and so everyone would rush to buy out all of the inventory, and then the government would decide not to have the strike after all - probably because they had all of their inventory cleared out, which may have been the reason for threatening to have the strike in the first place. I remember going to a special liquor store in Salt Lake City, but I don't remember whether grocery stores in St. George had wine or not. I would expect Utah to be a bit strict about this. When I was growing up in Texas, counties were either wet, dry, or damp, and I grew up in a damp county, meaning that you could buy beer and wine, but liquor was illegal, unless an incorporated city decided to legalize it. Harker Heights, just outside Ft. Hood decided to legalize it and grew tremendously because of that. I think that this has all changed by now, however.
