just a quick hello
Comments (1)Any More than 10 Gallons of poting soil,is very Havy to move around. The 5 to 10 Gallon buried 4 inches ingrownd with draining holes,on side close to bottom so roots will grow in grownd every year,is a much better choice in the long run. On the other hand the half barrel do not have to necesary be full of potting soil, just so much as you can handle yourself. So yes you can use half Barrel to plant in. And you can bury it 4 inches inground too. The fruit will be much tastier if fig,can feed from the sorrounding soil+ it will not depend on you for regular watering and nutrients. Comments (7)Kate, thats a tough problem, being sensitive to noise in a noisy world. One reason people move to the suburbs and buy a house is because its a lot quieter. People buy large properties so that they don't have any possibility of having noisy neighbors. We are living in an apartment while we remodel our house, and the noise is the biggest difference. Our apt is in the Los Angeles area. We have a car wash next door thats self serve and limos clean up in the middle of the night, people who wash their cars insist on playing their favorite music and you almost pray for somebody to switch from hip hop to country; some people come off the late shift at 3 a.m. and doors slam, etc. Its just as bad in Ontario and when we were in Paris there was a shooting next to the hotel. So my point is--its noisy all over unless you want to live in the suburbs or a rural area. You have a year--start planning where you want to move to and check back to see that it stays the way you want it. In the meantime, you are going to get used to some of the noise. If you continue to feel shaky and panicky I suggest you may want to give some thought to getting counseling. Life is simpler at your age--it gets noisier and more complicated as you get older, especially if you have kids and they have pets, etc. Good luck....See MoreMay I say something to all lurkers
Comments (57)Hi and thank you for the welcome. I usually lurk because I don't get here often. I find that when I get on the internet - and especially this site! - that I can spend an enormous amount of time. So while I enjoy checking in to see whats going on, or what is new, or new photos, I also check out the money saving tips, or crafts and painting. I actually don't fit in too much there either as I paint on canvas, but don't do crafts or decorative painting any more. But, I still enjoy seeing what others do. Everyone in these groups are very friendly and I know that if I occasionally have an answer or thought about something, it, nor I, will be rejected. I say silent prayers for those in need. Laugh at funny remarks, and have a great time. I have my cuppa and occasionally grab a refill. Rhonda...See MoreHello Houzz! Old "houzz" / new "houzz" ...
Comments (33)Thanks for checking in on our progress, patty_cakes! Unfortunately, with all of the rain we've received over the past month or so, progress came to a standstill and we are still waiting for our foundation to be poured! Construction crews all over this area are so far behind on jobs, and I'm trying to have patience. At least we presently have a house in which to live. I know that there are many who work construction here who depend on having those regular paychecks and when they stop rolling in, they really suffer. My heart goes out to them, and I'm trying to keep this all in perspective! As it now stands, our projected completion date is mid-October at the earliest. We have made all of our selections for the house, and I think I've got photos of most everything we've selected here in my "idea book." (Can you view it?) My vision was to keep things as classic and timeless as possible. We've chosen hardwood flooring throughout, with the exception of the bathrooms and the laundry which will be tiled. My kitchen will have white cabinets (with a couple of lighted Flemish-glass fronted cabinets to display my blue and white Cornishware), black granite countertops, and a glossy white subway tile backsplash. We've added crown molding throughout the house. Will have a stacked-stone fireplace in the living room (which is open to the kitchen - a concept that will be quite different than we are used to!). The bathrooms will be simply styled with white subway tile in the showers, white integrated counters/sinks, and we'll have brushed nickel hardware throughout the house. The walls will be painted a very neutral off-white -- certainly different from the Crayola box that our current house used to be! I'm yearning for simple, classic, clean. And new. Never, EVER thought I'd be saying that, but well ... here I am. :-) We'll be buying new furniture once we're in. I'm leaning towards a sectional in the main living space, and we'll need new bedroom furniture for the master and the upstairs bedroom. The little "game room" upstairs will be a space for TV watching and reading, and I'd like to furnish it sparsely but comfortably. I plan to use my paintings as pops of color, and it will be fun to figure out where to hang things once we move. I'll have to sell a few pieces, but I think I can use most of my favorites. We have already committed to plantation shutters in all of the rooms requiring window coverings, and I'm really happy with that decision. I've loved that look for ages, and am also just tired of dealing with curtains. Right now it still feels a little like a dream that's a long way off ... But I know we'll get there eventually!...See MoreTHE FRENCH BARN - Lacanche Canada
