can I fit a kitchen island?

I’d like to add a kitchen island to my home. Will an island fit in ‘dining area’ near kitchen? I’d like a table near the stairs and then living room furniture?
Will it have to be a peninsula instead?

An island outside of the kitchen really isn’t helpful. unless you aremoving the kitchen to the DR no island.

Do you have a picture of the space? The peninsula will make an island look strange since that is defining the end of the kitchen . I did have a customer add an island into the dining room and some storage cabinets to carry the kitchen into the next space and moved the table elsewhere.

KitchenRedo2...Am I reading your measurements correctly? Cooktop wall cabinet run: 2' + 1" Aisle b/w cooktop wall & island: 5'1" Island: 2' + 1" + 4-1/2" knee wall + 1'6" overhang Aisle b/w island overhang & deck wall: 4'1" I come up with a kitchen that's 15'2-1/2" deep, not 13'10" ...OR... Does the 5'1" include the cabinets + 1" overhang? So you have a 36" aisle b/w the cooktop run & the island? One note about aisle space behind seats...in KitchenRedo2's kitchen, it doesn't look like the aisle behind her seats is a major thoroughfare to/from the rest of the house so 4' (48") is probably plenty (except maybe in the summer...but then everyone should be outside!) But in the case where an aisle is a major path through the kitchen to the rest of the house, I would highly recommend 54" to 60" (60" is better). That figures 24" of space taken from the aisle for someone actually seated at the island + 30" to 36" of room for someone to edge or walk past.

Thirdkitchenremodel: Thanks for the pictures!! One question, Are those barstools on the floor? Is there is a step below?(hard to tell) Thanks to everyone else for all feedback, It really helps. I worked on the design last night and came up with this new layout, which basically moves the island out a tad, but NO floor extension-- My wife is happy with that! It is similar to Thirdkitchen's RIGHT side of their bar. And couldn't agree more about the 'setting your feet on the floor'. To me, it is far more comfortable than bar height in my opinion. I personally, do not like to sit too long at bar height. With this revision, I believe we are ready to go! Thanks again to everyone for input!

Thank you Mike, that is exactly what I thought. My architect may not be the best to give advice.. I want alternatives and new ideas which perhaps my architect/kitchen designer/myself did not yet think about. Also perhaps since it is a 'job' and right now in Malta all architects/kitchen designers etc are super busy, I can sense that my little kitchen may not be given the deserved attention. If I find a better alternative to what my architect/kitchen designer suggests, I will suggest it to the 'professional' and if it works, we will go ahead. For example.. Is it best to have the frige and cooker on one side and the sink on another? living area is best next to the balcony and kitchen before that or vice versa? In the end it all boils down to taste, yes but I need to make sure that I am using the little space I have as best I can and in the way it would be most practical. Thank you christina and Maria Privat, I will have a look and draw up you idea to see how it looks :)

First question is: Do you want a table in your dining room area or are you planning on using the dining room space for a larger kitchen and no table? If you still want a table in that space and the kitchen footprint will remain the same, I don't think you have room for an island and instead would use a peninsula. When the wall comes down, I would switch the placement of the stove and the refrigerator, placing the stove on the peninsula and moving the refrigerator over to the stove wall. I would also place the refrigerator at the end of that wall, instead of in the center where the stove was. A counter depth fridge would be well worth the investment as well. You may have room to pick up additional storage along the wall where the basement stairs are by using 12 inch deep base cabinets with uppers above.

I'd want an island and a larger kitchen. This is a good time to revisit and redesign the floor plan.

Start with the kitchen and open up the entire wall to the dining room. The island could run straight into it.

Then add a dining table/chairs into the living room.

The peninsula in the drawing was our contractors idea. I was hoping for the island.

How much do you want to spend? Turn the kitchen into the dining room, put the range and fridge on the wall currently with the slider, and put the island between the new kitchen and the living room. No you don’t have room in the current kitchen area for an island.
