I had one in my old kitchen. Total PITA. You're talking about over a counter like in the pictures, right? I have a cabinet in my new kitchen facing into the doorway where the slider is which is great, but there's no counter or anything, just walkway. The one over the counter, in the corner, requires getting up on a ladder, and reaching across, to get to the top and the far sides. I used the top shelf for the bazillion tumblers for large parties, the far side for stuff I didn't need often, and the near side for things like colanders that are big and easy to get in and out. In my new kitchen there's a corner cabinet. I don't know why it's so much easier to use. Perhaps it's because of the shape. One can reach diagonally across instead of kind of craning around. I have dinner plates in the corner on the first shelf, plastic plates for putting under odd stuff on the second, and the spare DW cutlery baskets on the top. That way I don't ever really have to reach very far in so it's not annoying, and the stuff that's up high is plastic and if I lose hold they don't break. On the near sides I have mostly large containers. Again, easy to get stuff that's not too delicate. I would not put dishes and glasses for regular use in the sideways position, and certainly not the half closer to the corner. Re the hitting the head on the door, I thing that's what happens when you have standard Euro hinges that only open 110 degrees. My old kitchen cabinets opened all the way flat (170-180 degrees), so that part wasn't a problem.

I think I'd like the glass on the sides in your kitchen....and now you all have me thinking about that option, as well! We are opening up our galley kitchen and both the upper and base cabinets at the entrance will be angled: The angles our cabinet guy plans will be slightly different than the sketch. His top cabinets will not have just two sides that meet in the middle like a triangle....and I think they'll be bigger than you see there. Having said that, you can see they are still will not be large, so maybe having the sides of the top cabinets glass would lighten up the look? Don't mean to "hijack" your posting (or "steal" your idea!), but thanks for giving me the idea and if others want to "weigh in", too, that would be awesome. We start the demo next week, and I'm a bit nervous about it all because our cabinet maker is old fashioned and just sketches on graph paper. I'd feel better if I could see his layout in 3D!

We're in the middle of a kitchen remodel using cabinets designed and ordered through Leicht Seattle. I wish I could go back in time and choose a different cabinetmaker. There were serious mismeasurements - cabinets extending into 2 doorways - and the owner won't replace the wrong-sized cabinets or even provide a packing list of what was delivered to our house. We chose to hire different installers and Leicht Seattle is deliberately making the install as hard as possible. It's become a nightmare. We've been camped in our living room with a microwave for over 3 months. I've read about similar experiences with other Leicht dealers. If you do buy Leicht cabinets, make sure you get very clear terms and disclosures before you pay them anything. They are very much about getting paid, even if you have no kitchen due to their errors.

All right. I know my skills are a little intimidating*, try not to faint... :-D I moved the wall forward, moved the double door to the right and added a window on the left, and added a coat closet to block the view through to the kitchen/slider. That's a pantry cabinet between the run of cabs and the new closet. You could do a two-sided bookcase instead of the coat closet, very mcm. I wasn't sure of the dimensions so nothing is to scale and you would have to play with dimensions to ensure there is enough room to walk through comfortably and keep an open feel. And obviously, if any walls are load bearing they are much easier to erase on my phone than in real life. *just kidding, this is my first attempt at editing a photo!! As if you couldn't tell...
