Oak Tree Leaves Sparse- is is dieing?

My oak tree had really sparse leaves last year. Was hoping it would come back better this year. I think it has a few more this year but just observations and from memory. Not sure if it was the cicadas a few years ago or what happened to it. Is this tree doomed or is there any hope of it reviving?

Can you give us your location? Also, do you know what kind of oak it is?

With a tree that size and well established, there is nothing you can do but wait and see what it does over the summer.

In my midwestern location, we had an extreme cold snap with extreme winds right before Christmas that lasted about 3 days. That caused some limb dieback on various trees in my area, especially those that have little tolerance for temps lower than my zone 6 norm.

You mentioned cicadas…I also live in an area that had a very heavy brood X infestation summer of 21. I had lots of limb die back that summer, a little more in 22, and even some more this spring. Every limb smaller than about 1/2 inch has a calloused over split line on the underside..:and I’m convinced trees are still shedding some of those heavily damaged thin limbs.

So if it puts on new growth this summer, and there is no more limb die back…then it may simply be a combo of things causing the tree to get rid of damage and heal itself.

Let me reiterate my concern. Even if a tree struck by lightning lives and continues to grow, the tree may well have damage that will not only limit its lifespan, but also can make it a hazard in the future. Some trees can survive a lightning strike--small ones like resin describes--and be OK. I say OK and mean OK, not really fine. White oak survives and grows as well as any tree, and a really notable lightning survivor, or so I am told, is the larger of the two tuliptrees next to Monticello, T. Jefferson's home in Charlottesville, VA. This tree is aver 8 feet in diameter and is, I am told, hollow from the old lightning damage. But the tree has closed its wound completely and you can't see any trace of it now. But in my old neighborhood in Arlington, VA a really huge tuliptree was struck a few years ago and the lightning made a path between a fork in the tree that had a good "bridge" of wood between. At this point the bridge was killed and unless one looked very carefully one would not see this critical damage. This tree is so large that if this now killed bridge splits, a house could be crushed and people killed. Even if a tree just has a streak down its trunk, this is killed wood and it may not heal. Rot and bugs of various kinds can get into the tree and start working away at the tree's basic support. Please be careful! --Spruce

Post a pic of it. PReferably several pics that are in focus and show some that show the trunk and the soilball and some closeups of the leaves and indicate if anything abnormal has happened lately such as lawn guy spraying chemicals, prolonged drought, prolonged rains etc.

Does regal prince oak really retain its leaves in winter?

I don't know about the prince oak, but the pin oaks here in 7a GA tend to hold on to a lot of their leaves to about mid to late January, and to about 30 years old, even in the windy openness of mall parking lots around here. I planted two pin oaks on the property line of my neighbors to block +a) view from their porch into my yard and (b) their flood light that can be seen from outer space. You may want to Google street view a few areas that have the tree you mention, to see if Google street view has any winter shots of the view. The beech trees here hold their leaves through early March it seems. They might be another option if you don't get answers on the prince oak, although beech trees are finicky and slow growers. I just found my Copper Fungicide. I was wondering, is there a chance I could be harming the tree using that stuff? I've heard that copper can kill a tree, BUT, maybe that is just copper sulfate? And the little bit of copper in the spray won't harm the tree. I know it worked fine for you Joe, BUT, I'm just worried since it will be on the layer where it could soak in. They've used copper nails to kill trees also, BUT, this is just a spray with less than 1% copper according to the label. I guess it is fine, BUT, it has on the directions to use on the leaves of plants. It doesn't mention applying to trunks or stems of plants. Maybe I;ll go and look for a non copper bases fungicide, just to be safe. Joe, what type of plant had you used Copper Fungicide on? I am just afraid to kill my tree. I'm going to get a non copper fungicide to be safe. I kind of answered my own question for myself, BUT, anyone have any real facts about that from experience in a situation where copper fungicide DID kill a plant? I don't know if Joe just got lucky that his tree wasn't harmed. Sorry Joe, not to poo poo your advice, BUT, I am just afraid to chance it, even as weak a amount of copper in the spray.

I am in Cecil County, MD. North Eastern MD at the top of the Chesapeake Bay.

Just found a bunch of lichens on it tonight and that there is a bunch of sap on many of the limbs that wasn't there before last year and wasn't there a few weeks ago.

Not sure exactly the type of oak...many a pin oak?

It doesn't look good at all. Very severe cicada damage could do that. One would hope a tree could recover from that -- my trees had some to fairly bad damage, but nothing that bad.

We just paid a certified arborist $75 to assess a huge tree in our front yard. Call one in your area
