Advice on floating shelves in my kitchen!

Would love to have some input about what I can do with the hood area of my kitchen. I was originally going to put white oak floating shelves, but after installing the knobs/drawers I’m afraid the wooden tone will take away from the specific hardware I chose. The backsplash is going to be the same countertop, and it would have been now ideal to make a thin shelf with the same stone but we don’t have enough stone for that. My next option would be to do white floating shelves. I’ve attached pictures of my kitchen and what I purchased as island pendants for reference, and I’ll also attach 3 Inspo looks. Comments (9)Seeing your two mock-ups above, I think it would could work either way. IMHO, however, your first instinct was probably better: it does balance better, it prevents a glass corner from sticking out that close to the range, and it allows more breathing room for a behind-the-range feature if you ever plan to add one. Your original order and idea will look better, just in m opinion, since you asked. I'm estimating that those are 15 inch lowers on each side, which would give you a very nice visual "breathing space" on either side of the hood. Oh, and if you win the lottery and want to install a tile or other backsplash from range top, all the way to the ceiling, you'd still be able to do it without removing the shelves. Comments (17)@Alex Kelsey Wanted to let you know how things are going for us, since it seems we are a little further along than you are. Talked to our contractor about what your contractor said, and he said it wouldn't have worked for us anyway because it's on an outside wall, which is load bearing. So it was a good thing we put in the brackets, attached to the studs. Talked to the fabricator today, and he is finally willing to embed our brackets into the stone, so that you only see the 3 cm edge, nothing thicker. It took some convincing, but he was willing to do it! After advice from Joseph Corlett, I told our fabricator that we didn't plan on putting heavy dishes on our shelf (which is true, since we plan on putting a few decorative things but keeping it mostly spare) and so even if it weakens the stone, it won't be used like a countertop. He finally said ok, as long as we don't plan on using it for dish storage. It gave me confidence to push for it since Joseph said it was possible. I asked our fabricator if he would have been willing to do the same thing in soap stone if he knew nothing heavy was going on the shelves, and he said yes. So hopefully this info helps you! Maybe you can install the steel brackets (we got ours from the original granite brackets company online) after talking to your fabricator about embedding it in the stone, if you don't plan on putting heavy items on your shelf....See MoreKitchen - Height of backsplash with some floating shelves
Comments (4)Thank you so much. It’s been a whirlwind. We do like the natural light and that’s what we tried to maintain. Doing pulls all around because I really wanted to be more modern. Actually inset was not my choice, but I lost a battle with our carpenter. I won’t bore you with the details. The floating shelves are not going to be very wide, and will be more decorative - cook books, etc. They were basically the solution for the unplanned beam above. We didn’t want there to be a cabinet underneath, although now in hindsight…that probably would have been he better functional and aesthetic option! Live and learn, very expensively. Back to the backsplash, no pun intended! my original thought was to just go up to the floating shelves and NOt on the left, as you suggested. But the tile guy thought that with line of sight, it was better to complete it around. That made sense to me, but again, my initial thought was same as yours. Below is a picture of the full wall. Technically the tile would wrap full around to the window all the way on the left as well. Would your recommendation be the same knowing that?And do you currently have 2 or 3 shelves and what’s the space between each? 10 months agolast modified: 10 months agoMaybe you could try to create a little alcove area so the range hood does not overwhelm the space. Make it look more intentional. None of these are quite right but you get the idea.
