Roof pitch and elevation
Comments (8)Just my opinion, but the 8/12 pitch looks better in my eyes, but there is nothing wrong with the 6/12 pitch either. We are currently building a house and our main roof has a pitch of 8/12 and our garage has a 10/12 pitch. The framers finished the roof last week and the roofers started putting shingles on this week. I haven't heard either on of them complain about the pitch, although I know it's steep. They both walk all over the roof as if it was a flat floor. (I'm sure they should be using some sort of safety harness, but I guess it's their life they are risking.) However, no mater how you look at it, a 6/12 pitch is definitely more safe than an 8/12 pitch. One thing to consider is how often will you be up on your roof vs. how often will you be looking at the front of your house wishing you had done the steeper roof?...See MoreReplacing elevated deck with a roof
Comments (0)We are remodeling a house that has an attached deck that is elevated about 8 ft above the ground. It has a roof that is attached to the house and apparently was part of the original design. The uprights appear to be sound but the horizontal surfaces all need replacing due to carpenter ant damage. This will be a DIY (if at all possible) and we are wondering how to make sure that we don't collapse the roof or make the whole structure unstable. We are pretty handy and have built decks but haven't had a complex project. The roof and perhaps some of the underlayment under the roofing will be replaced. The deck is about 12x12 and there is a 6ft wide covered deck attached (walkway from the garage). If anyone has suggestions, we'd love to hear them! Thanks in advance. Comments (1)There may be more to the rule then you are aware of. You really need to check with your local building authorities. Some locales require permits and some also require that the dryer be placed on its own platform safe from being hit by an automobile. So if you are stacking them in the garage in a location where they cannot be hit by a car, stacking may be fine, but if the stack could be hit by a car, local rules may require a platform that will protect the gas dryer from automobile damage....See MoreGarage addition elevation is wrong - how can we improve?
Comments (31)Thanks for replying with some great advice. The architect did provide elevation drawings, though said “it won’t be noticeable”. I should have asked for the measurements. It’s a bonus room, we’re really thankful for the space. Full siding, not 100% on color yet as we’re painting the whole house. It’s likely going to be close to save on paint. The pergola is a great idea, breaking it up may work. And the trim to line it up a bit. The porch will have prominent white columns and no railing. You all have helped a lot with ideas and talking me off the ledge. Once it’s complete I’ll have a better sense of how to improve it. I‘m sure there’s more we could do too....See MoreRelated Professionals
