The room will usually fool the eye into taking on the aspect of the building material. So if you use the tile vertically, yes, it could make the room look "taller". Ceiling colors versus wall colors can do the same. If you had a ceiling that was darker than the wall color, the darker color can attract attention, and visually make the ceiling appear to be lower than it is. A lighter colored ceiling can make the ceiling appear higher. Same with floor. Floor tile in a linear or stacked pattern will pull the eye from one wall to the opposite wall, the shortest distance. Tile on a diagonal can pull the eye on a diagonal, the longer dimension. That can make the room to appear more expansive. If you're into psycho-babble mind-melding voodoo stuff like that.

Sumod- The medicine cabinets are simple wood frames with a cabinet-grade plywood back that just sit in the stud cavity. Because of the dimensions, the front of the frame projects about 1"+ beyond the finished wall. The medicine cabinet doors are also plywood with veneered edges and they are attached to the frame with standard cabinet hinges (Euro hinges). The mirrors are just 1/4" plate glass ordered to size from a glass shop and held in place with mirror mastic and a metal strip at the bottom that you don't really see. The guy who did the cabinets just made the medicine cabinets as part of the job. I don't know about the door brand...we live in a large metro area that has lots of door shops and the doors are just solid core maple doors with the center cut out and a maple panel held in with molding. They're not stained; they simply have a couple coats of clear spray lacquer.

Hi - I don't know if it's better to start a new post about this ongoing dilemma so I'm posting here and hopefully someone will see it. We are now having mirror issues with this same bathroom and I was hoping to get some opinions. Here is the wall right now, the two lights were just installed (they will have glass covers on them but don't right now, they won't be that bright!) Vanity will be on the left, flush with the wall, toilet on the right: We had found the perfect framed mirror to span the whole wall - I measured it, it fit exactly, and then the crew had to build out the wall just slightly on the right and now it doesn't fit by about half an inch. I am back to square one and wondering about my options. Here's how it would have looked with the full mirror: Unfortunately the search to find that perfect mirror took forever and it doesn't seem possible to find one that fits the new specs without going custom (~$500 vs the $50 I spent on the mirror!) The wall is exactly 59" wide and the space allowed by the new outlet and the lights is 30". The mirror we found was 25" tall. I'm only finding long enough but too narrow or way too tall. I don't want to go back to having just a mirror over the vanity, partially because we had those lights installed and it seems like it would look strange to have a light over the toilet for no reason (right?). Also I had really wanted to have more mirror space since our kids will be sharing this bathroom and the vanity top is pretty small (24"). I'd also been hoping to avoid a frameless mirror that is glued to the wall. I'm wondering if it would be weird to have a mirror that's *almost* as wide as the wall and balance out the extra space with framed art/photos. Like this: I'm going to try to find a mirror that I can actually bring home and return if need be, but for now I just have to imagine it. I can't seem to find photos of what I'm thinking. Thoughts? Thank you all so much for your feedback! I have incorporated a lot of your comments into the design. I am going to propose the following changes to the builder (we are mid framing): Increase French door width to 6 feet. Make the 3 foot door panel closest to sink fixed. Make the functional 3 foot door near tub swing inward. I will have him keep the doors pretty much centered on the bedroom vault but go over one foot longer to accommodate the extra foot (especially since really shouldn’t get closer to sink). This will also make the bathroom seem more balanced I think and the operable door with open to the chandelier in the bathroom. I will also place a large full length mirror on back wall next to linen closet which will reflect light from large bedroom window feature (and hopefully be more attractive than looking at plain wall or side of bathroom door) Change shower door swing and add a towel bar on door (this is brilliant!). Should the towel bar be on outside of door itself or to the left? Change WC door to be a pocket door to eliminate the look of so many doors and so don’t have to look at it when open (and we often would probably leave it open so this way it doesn’t block mirror). I will have to ask contractor about this but I suspect he could do pocket door into the open attic space. I will change the direction and swing of both closet doors and will also ask about cost to upgrade them to French doors (well single door but glass with divided panes— and will do white curtain on back like suggested). Do you think it’s worth it to upgrade linen closet to same door? Thank you for all the suggestions!!
