Comments (34)G'morning! My apologies for not being around; we have been busy with 4th of July festivities. I want to take a moment to thank jill302 for her kind words in the last thread. I had mentioned that my knees were hurting and she wished me well. So, "thank you, Jill!" - it was much appreciated. As far as beauty goes, I think every single one of you is beautiful inside and out, even though I've never laid eyes on any of you! :) It's interesting that being beautiful has come up in this thread. I was sitting in a bar over the weekend having a beer when the 20something woman sitting next to me, turned and said, "you know, you are really beautiful." Let me tell you, my soon to be 65 year old self was shocked! At first, I thought she was pulling my leg in a mean spirited way, but after chatting with her for a few minutes I think she was sincere. Even if she was not, I'm going to take it that way. Over the weekend, we were at our vacation home and it was very hot. 106 on Saturday and it stayed in the triple digits the entire weekend dropping to a cool 101 by the time we headed home on Tuesday. Having moved to a much cooler climate a couple of years ago, that was a real shock to my system, but I did manage to get a walk in every day that we were there. They were much shorter than what I usually do, but at least I got out there and got moving. Food wise, I did ok. We had bbq ribs with potato salad, but the other sides were watermelon and corn. I stuck to my smaller portions and had only one rib, just a small serving of potato salad, half a cob of corn and a couple of slices of watermelon. The worst thing I ate over the weekend was a slice of pecan pie from the ice cream social held by the local church. But, the pie is a yearly tradition and I wasn't going to deprive myself of that. I didn't eat it all in one sitting; just a few bites on Tuesday, a little bit yesterday and I still have half of that slice left. I did drink more beer than usual, but we were having a good time and I'm not going to beat myself up over that. Yesterday, I was back to my regular walk and I'm about to walk two miles to the farmers market to buy peaches and strawberries. This morning, I tried on several pairs of pants that did not fit me last week, but they fit me today (and not just that I was able to button them, but they really fit) - yay! What prompted me to try them on was putting on my regular jeans this morning and noticing that they were quite loose around the waist. Loose enough that I needed a belt to hold them up. I feel like I woke up slimmer this morning; does weight loss happen over night? Anyway, I'm quite happy with how the week and weekend went. To top it all off, hubby and I had a wonderful time together so I'm in a great mood. Funky, I'll chime in that I have a friend who uses the trekking poles for hiking and walking around her neighborhood. She doesn't have vision or balance issues, but she finds that she feels much more confident using them, especially over rough terrain. Because of my bad knee, I've been think of getting a pair as well. To all of you - keep up the good work, congratulate yourself for your successes and don't get discouraged over setbacks as we start each day with a clean slate....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 7/9/2023
Comments (24)@legomom23 I'm so sorry you've caught covid and have been sick. I hope that it remains mild and that you feel back to normal soon. It sounds like you're being smart and listening to what your body is ready for in terms of activity. @Funkyart I'm glad you've made it through your surgery and dental work. That is a lot. I completely understand that sometimes we only have capacity for managing one or a few challenging health things at a time. It sounds like you're making great progress and ready to work on the next item on the list (thyroid). I will say that as someone also on thyroid medication, it is life-changing for me and I feel immensely better and more able to do physical activity when my levels are correct. I also completely understand and sympathize with the frustration of maintaining / plateauing when you want to progress. From what you've described, it sounds like you've already had amazing progress and really are doing well from an improved health perspective. I am certain that you will continue moving forward in time, it just may be slower because you are so much closer to your goal. @gsciencechick I love that! Sorry I haven't been great about keeping up to date here. While I am mostly over that horrific cold I had, I am still struggling with some residual coughing (not bad, but sometimes at night or after/during exertion of exercise), runny nose, and low energy. This week and last week I have been back fully on track with my morning (summertime) cardio exercise of swimming and running. I am also back on track in terms of doing my 5:2 IF. I had to pause while I was sick because when I tried to do it while sick, it made me way more sick. (Lesson learned.) I am now battling the 2 extra pounds from being sick on top of the few extra pounds I was already fighting. I think I'm down 1lb after 1-2 weeks of getting mostly back on track. I am trying to refocus on IF and even more so on reducing snacking and focusing on healthy meals. I am not, however, back on track in terms of weight lifting. I am unbelievably busy at work. I've recently been talking with an HR consultant and she was shocked that I am doing significant individual contributor software engineering work on top of having 8 direct reports to manage. I love what I do, but some weeks it's just a LOT. Now I'm being added to more senior leadership meetings in addition to my already busy schedule and suddenly I don't even have 20-30min at lunch time to lift weights every day. I've gotten to it once this week, but I need to get back on track....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 8/20/2023
Comments (21)Things are going well here as far as the exercise goes. I of course can't really lose weight but I'm enjoying going dancing two or three times a week thrown in the mix right now. Going to free summer concerts helps with that. Also we go dancing once a week to alive music pub Friday nights or Saturday nights. The music is pretty good. DH is enjoying tries out different beers one beer each time. Are you ready for fall activities, clothes and food? I'm not ready for Fall. But I am more than ready for Fall. I don't want to stop wearing my summer clothes and going to all the summer dancing that we have been doing. I want the fires to be gone and people to not be too hot who are uncomfortable in the heat. It is weird to feel such Joy in being able to do these summertime activities and feel such sadness for people who are caught in fires and storms and etc. I guess both can exist at the same time but they are uncomfortable together. How are you doing with your healthy lifestyle goals? In as much as I can do my healthy lifestyle style goals are being met. As I said above I can't lose weight. But hopefully I can shift things enough through weight lifting etc to help with my problem areas. I'm looking at you muffin top.. What's going well As I've said before the shortened time span that I eat my meals with IF seems to work very well for me. My weight stays fairly consistent and has ever since I started this program. I don't look at it to help me lose weight as that seems to be a non-starter for me. It does definitely contribute to maintenance. I seem to need to cut out all extra evening snacks to maintain my weight no matter what level of activity I do. What needs more work and focus? I need to weight lift more even if it is body weight lifting and de-stress somehow so that I can lose the excess cortisol in my system and maybe not have a muffin top ;-). Wishing everybody else health and safety. I've been distracted by all these summer activities so haven't said much to individuals. But I think of you all almost every day....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 8/27/2023
Comments (23)Oh yes-- loving the cool mornings! It is 52 this morning ... my walk was short this morning but it was lovely! I am just so glad to be able to get out! I just saw a short video about clothing fit .. they did a comparison of a "good enough" fit vs "proper fit". Her point was that many women can/should go down 1-2 sizes. I have noticed the same recently .. sure, I have gone down sizes as I've lost weight but right before my vacation, I realized I was still wearing a number of clothes too big. Of course, I have lost a lot of weight and I am not going to replace my whole wardrobe so I do have some clothes that are oversized .. but even in the clothes I am replacing, I was sticking too close to my old sizes. My new strategy is to size down an extra size on base pieces and then keep wearing my oversized tees, sweaters and jackets. I went down an additional 2 sizes in tanks and an one size in long sleeve tees and athletic shorts. It has made a huge difference. Fall is great for this strategy -- I now have a few pairs of jeans, a short jean skirt and a long jean skirt that fit fairly well. I can add a belt (i splurged on all new belts a few months ago) a trim top and then layer on whatever I want! It helps that I have broad shoulders as I can carry off an oversized sweater or jacket. I am ready for some fun fall events and outings! I know this is a fairly self-indulgent post lol ... but I do think that looking good and put together as I am losing weight helps keep me motivated and most importantly feeling good about myself. I still have 60-70 lbs to lose so I think this strategy will also help me be wiser about what I DO buy. I admit, I bought some dresses this summer that weren't my best picks. They made me feel great when I bought them but 10lb later, they are too big and not as flattering as they were when they fit perfectly. I shouldn't be buying styles that are so fitted that 10-15 lb take them from sharp to dumpy. One final recent lesson-- I am fairly anti-shapewear. I am anti spanx. I just don't like squeezing myself into shapewear and I don't like how I feel wearing them. I feel like I am trussed and bound and can't move comfortably. Enter Shapermint -- they are SO easy to put on and really do help smooth the bumps and bulges particularly in stomach/muffin top area. They are also pretty affordable compared to some of the other shapewear products. I don't wear them every day -- or even regularly-- but I could! They are comfortable and easy enough to wear that I will throw them on with a pair of jeans if I want to look especially smooth and trim. I know it is not all about appearance -- improving my health is the goal but part of good mental health is feeling good about ourselves. I feel great about my progress but I haven't always felt good about my appearance. These little tweaks have me feeling good about the face I am presenting to the world so I am more inclined to go out and be more social. I smile more and I engage more. So many of us struggle with our appearance ... we focus on what we perceive as our flaws. We look in the mirror and frown (or is that just me? lol). Let's make an effort to be good to ourselves this holiday weekend! I don't have any plans or events this weekend but I am going to make sure that I don't look in the mirror and frown! I will smile at the people i see instead of looking down at the ground or stare off in the distance. I will engage positively with myself!...See MoreRelated Professionals
