Need Advice - Bathroom tiled floor
Comments (2)Did you skip putting hardibacker (or similar) on the wood subfloor before you added the radiant heat mat and tile? If you did, that's probably what caused the damage. My heart sinks for your pain. I wouldn't wish that kind of rework on anyone. But if your tiles are moving, they likely aren't attached to the mat any more. So if you cut the grout, they should come up without pulling the wires with them. If there are still some attachment points, I'd think you could chisel them off from between the tile & mat and possibly preserve the wiring. We used Warming Systems under our tile because it was half the cost of the mats and just a little more work--you tape the wire to the floor. If you can't salvage your SunTouch mats (pulling them up so you can put in Hardibacker may be more destructive than removing the tile), it might be a cheaper replacement alternative. Best of luck. I'd be interested in how it works out for you....See MorePlease help me pick bathroom flooring (pics)
Comments (33)I have the Daltile octagon and dot in my bathroom too: And now here's where I will get myself into trouble...I love the look but hesitated for a long time because EVERYONE warned that it would be very hard to keep clean, the grout would look nasty soon etc etc etc. Thing is, using dark grout on white or light tile because it 'won't show dirt' to me is like saying okay, let's just make it look dirty from the get go. What I ended up doing was going with my heart and putting in white grout with my white floors. Then, before I started using the room I applied white Aquamix grout colorant and 2+ years later, everything looks just fine and dandy. I will say this isn't a bathroom that gets abused by tons of people or messy kids (it's a master and mostly my daughter and I use it) but it does get used daily. I even have the tile w/white grout in my shower and it's still looking fine as well. I mop weekly and in the shower I use some Soft Scrub with a dilute bleach spritz and it all has held up quite well. So my long winded message is that there are alternatives to just giving up before you start and grouting the dirt color into your floor :). Comments (10)Somebody posted a picture of fan shaped mosaic marble that was gorgeous. I can't find the post but here is a picture that is similar. It was grouted with coordinating colour, no contrast and it looked so beautiful. Fan shaped marble mosaic. We have no idea if you are thinking classic or modern looks for your bath. Maybe you could pull out some inspiration pictures from Houzz to see what else catches your eye. This one is an all time favourite of mine - also quite a formal look basketweave Or, if you are looking for larger scale floor tiles, there are many choices too. Marble tile. This would match your counter, or dark grey or black to contrast....See Morehelp me pick bathroom tiles, please!
Comments (6)Slate tile is a great choice. I have it in a washroom and we love it. But it does tend to feel cold underfoot. Any chance you are considering under floor heating in that bathroom. We got brushed slate, which means that there are no rough edges or shaling going on. We got a dark grey colour but I also saw it in other colours, lighter grey (almost a greige colour), a green colour and some that was closer to black but had some significant rust colour in it. If you have a look, you should find it easily and it came in many sizes as well. I like something like 12 X 18 or 12 X 24 tile for flooring. When you say you want to use it in the shower as well, do you mean on the floor of the shower? If so, then you'd need much smaller tiles for that to accommodate the slope needed towards the drain in the floor. But you can likely find the same stone in smaller tile sizes. I recommend the brushed slate for the smoothness. Some slate I looked at I felt the ridges were enough to catch your toe and some were quite sharp feeling as well. I think that could look really fantastic with a white subway tile. Have a look at some of the handmade looking tiles. That might go really nicely with the rustic look of the slate tile for the floor. Have you chosen a vanity? We went with a pearly grey colour and that was the colour of grout we used as well and it looks great....See MoreAndee
